Hi,
I'm going to buy a new computer quite soon and just wondering which processor would be most useful for analysing chess. Are there any benchmarks for different CPUs available somewhere?
I guess candidates are:
Intel i7 xxx (fastest, but how much?)
intel Qxxx
AMD Phenom X4 xxxx
Any ideas?

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPECint
And: http://www.spec.org/cpu2006/results/cpu2006.html
Note that the chess program sjeng is part of the benchmark.

You have to watch out with all mentioned benchmarks, because they include hyperthreading, and will overstate Core i7 performance.

That might be true but the top Corei7 is the best with maybe the exception of the top Core 2 Quad. The AMD lot is to be forgotten as Intel is way ahead of the competition.Gian-Carlo Pascutto wrote:You have to watch out with all mentioned benchmarks, because they include hyperthreading, and will overstate Core i7 performance.

I thought Crafty was one of the benchmark programs. Did sjeng replace it, or is Crafty part of a different benchmark?sje wrote:See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPECint

The replacement was made a few years ago.Robert Pope wrote:I thought Crafty was one of the benchmark programs. Did sjeng replace it, or is Crafty part of a different benchmark?sje wrote:See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPECint
