Nakamura - Aronian position

Post by Dirt »

Here's a position from a recent FRC game that percyblakeney at chessgames.com pointed out engines have a hard time with. Both sides have castled, so it's now a standard chess position. [d]2kr1r1q/Bp3pbp/2p1bnp1/4p3/5P2/P1N3PP/1PPR4/2KR1B1Q w - -
I tested two programs and neither found Ba6 in the maximum time I was willing to wait, but both agreed after I pointed it out to them.

ZCT does OK here, finds it in a couple of minutes.

what are the three programs??? what is the point of posting analysis if you don't ascribe it to a particular engine.

I wrote "seems" because I am uncertain of the meaning of "+M" in the "score" column at depth 19 in the output I posted. Perhaps Bob or another who is a Crafty expert can elucidate.

I'll let Crafty run longer on the position, just to see what happens.

+M is a large fail high (or fail low if black to move) and means that crafty thinks it is winning at least a piece and possibly a mate. You need to let it finish the ply to find the real score.

Thanks. I'll modify the search time so that Crafty completes depth 19.

No forced mate, just me misunderstanding Crafty's output. After completing depth 19, Crafty plays Bxa6 and scores it +5.44. See below.
