I got that unit in 1989 or so, in Miami, in a shop where every kind of cheap electronic stuff was sold. The shop was in a third world kind of street and then nothing made me presupose it was a good bargain.
In fact I consider it the best unit in terms of quality, price and console I have ever had. It plays an strong game, even in the ending, where the Spracklen had some very good heurictic, specially relative to the King. In endings of mature Spracklen programs, the King becomes a dangerous attacking piece.
To win Par, you must go to the very end and stabb him in the heart with a wooden pole.
I won a game to it -30 moves an hour-but not before the beast fought to the very end and even with a horse and a pawn of advantage for me, I was compeled to play with the utmost care to avoid a draw or even a mate that the guy swindled many times.
A joyous afternoon with a great uni.
salutes

Re: Playing Old, Excelent Par Excellence
This is a coincidence...yesterday I also had occasion to play a couple
of games against my Par Excellence. I got mine on ebay a few years
ago as a bare board. I managed to get an original par excellence box
and owners' manual elsewhere. The reason you see a lot more of the
ordinary 'Excellence' is because Fidelity over priced the Par Excellence,
charging almost twice as much as the Excellence. This is from the
information I have read.
It's a neat machine, and yes, plays a tough game. You notice it has
those flat topped LED lights on it, they will be hard to come by when
one goes bad, at least I have'nt seen them around here.

from Bulgaria
from the date and cosmetic's of the board i would bet this is a clone of the Fidelity Par Excellence or Excellence
