Looking for a 16-core engine

Post by Clemens P. »

My brother purchased a rather 'strong' machine (16-core, 64-bit System), and asked me whether I knew a strong chess engine which could benefit from these specs. I only found engines for at most 4-core systems on the web,(that is - among the open source and freely available ones, and Deep Fritz doesn't seem to be a 'dedicated' 16-core engine either).
Do you know of any chess engine which could use 16-cores / 64-Bit to its full potential (doesn't matter whether it's free or commercial)?
Thanks for any tipps.

Rybka 3, Zappa Mexico II, Hiarcs 12, Deep Fritz 11, Naum 4 ... are just a few of the engines that will perform quite well with 16 cores. When you say 16 core do you mean an 8 core system with 8 cores extra that are hyperthreaded? If so then it actually is only an 8 core system in reality and will perform as such.

Rybka 3 and Zappa Mexico II are surely the 2 best choices with 16 cores (Rybka 3 is probably 100+ elo stronger but Zappa have more king-attack skill, I think Naum 4 doesn't run very well with so much cores)
And yes hyperthreading have to be disable on Core i7 !

Ok thanks for your tipps, so I'll get him a 'Deep' Version of Rybka then.
According to what he told me he got a x16-core machine, but I'm not an expert whether this could be the same as an x8-machine. thx.

Crafty will run on 16 cores just fine. But it does need 16 real cores, not 8 real cores with each core using hyper-threading.

I've tested on such machines several times, but they are generally pricey as they are not dual-socket, but rather 4-socket server-type boxes.
