Computer chess in the UK

Post by mephisto »

Within Mike Walters chess computer web site is an excellent historic description about the history of computer chess here in the UK.
If you haven't already visited Mike's site it's well worth a visit as it's a wealth of information and has probably the best photos of chess computer available (sorry SteveB).

Thanks Bryan,
I was not aware is this excellent source. Of course, I would like to refer some information as well to link some photos within the chess programming wiki.

Cheers,

Hi Bryan,
while I am not particular interested in dedicated chess computers per se, I am interested in the History of computer chess (programming), not only UK but world wide. Regarding UK, I found the reports by Alex Bell very interesting (see cpw), his work for Nils Barricelli, on his program Atlas etc.. Alex Bell mentions John Scott (and his tutor Dr. Alan Bond), who wrote one of the first British programs ("Scott's program"), which competed versus Mac Hack IV and Bell's Atlas program (the forrunner of Master by Birmingham/Kent). The involvement of Donald Michie and Jack Good in early British computer chess, and what happened with Ron Atkin from University of Essex and his sophisticated ideas on evaluation?

The story of Philidor Press and Intelligent Software seems also quite fascinating, and how they build their first dedicated units with 6502.

Some more people to recognize on this picture?

I agree that desicated chess computers have an completely other appeal then programs for general purpose machines.

Cheers,
Gerd

its a pity we were not told the details in the many years before.

Here we have a fairy tale of the day after tomorrow....

Hi Steve
I was actually going to email him last night about why he has disappeared from Ismenios forum but never got around to it.
I've already emailed Richard and when he replies to my request for additional names to the photo, I will contact Mike tell him what you have said.

Hi Christopher,
may be you should read the site, Bryan initially posted a link to ;-)
There are also photos of your mentioned people, but I can't recognize them on the above photo. The karma of the picture is magnificent.

Cheers,
Gerd
