Ancalagon needs six six seconds at the moment to find Nf6+. This looks a bit like a walk over for Kasparov, to have Karpov in such a bad position for Black after a mere 22 moves? But it seems 21... Nc5 was wrong and after 21... Ne5 the game would at least not have been over instantly. Nice shot as they say!

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Positional Knightmove counterpart of testposition

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Eelco de Groot wrote: But it seems 21... Nc5 was wrong and after 21... Ne5 the game would at least not have been over instantly.
A more positional move to be found, not very hard is in the position just before this, 21... Nc5 was wrong but after 21... Ne5, if Karpov would have played that, White still has a big advantage, but not a forcing sacrifice. The best move for White now is in my opinion a temporary Knight retreat so something of the opposite of the move in John's test. Stockfish finds it easily but for Ancalagon it was harder, it needs a long time to see that other moves are worse, especially a move like 22.Rd1 (or f.e. 22.Re1) is not as strong as the best.

Build 304 sees advantage after 22. Rd1 that is not really there...

This is not my best version, at least I hope I managed to find a slight improvement, but with build 304 I let the analysis run the longest and it shows that 22. Rd1 is not very good, more clearly.

I wonder if Kasparov had this whole line already prepared in his opening database, on that famous notebook of his? Just 22 moves, seems not impossible that he would have analyzed it already up to this point...

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.
