Does anybody knows where can I find an online web where I can calculate how much my computer spend (in € or $) in a year at full 100% a day?

I would like to know how much cost me this hobbie......

Here in the USA you can buy a simple device called the "Kill-O-Watt" that measures total wattage an appliance draws. You can do the same with a voltmeter. Then just multiply kilowatts times your local utility rate.

And how much do all you think the generation of that power supply contamine?

All this questions comes because I had a discussion with my wife. She is now in a "save the planet" state, and she has reason in part. She now is opposing I had the computer all day running and I said her I would prefer sacrificing other thing. The problem is I had a big fight..... and sure it will continue....

I've measured the power consumption of my computers using a device I bought from the local supermarket. The device looks just like an electronic timer you plug into the wall socket that you would use for automatically turning things off and on. They are a fairly common device these days, so take a closer look the next time you are in the supermarket.

My AMD Athlon 3200+ uses 160 watts when idle, 180 watts when cpu at 100%. Note that figure includes the LCD screen which uses 30 watts.

My HP Netbook uses only 22 watts when cpu at 100%, 20 watts when screen is off.

Also, you probably have the choice to switch to "green" power with your electricity supplier. Go to their web site to see if they have that option.

I pay €0.22 per kWh. So if I would run 2 laptops (40W) in stead of a desktop (180W) I would save 140W x 24hr/d x 0.22 €/kWh x 365d = €269.81 per year on electricity.

That earns me back the laptops pretty quickly. In fact, for my last laptop I payed only €249.- Laptops are very compettive.

It looks to me that laptops are not thinked to stay up so many hours.

i think laptops are designed to run 24h x 7 days.
i know it because i use them this way. and they do not break into pieces from using them.

I think the problem with laptops - to some of us - is that it's hard to imagine a satisfying setup with like 4-8 or more computers...
