Hello everyone,
There are only two weeks left to register for CCT 12, with registration cut off on February 14, 2010.
This is to ensure everyone's accounts are setup and have been tested.
Please register as soon as you can, so we can set your account up on FICS, and you have ample time to test your setup before Tournament Day on February 21.

I have already a working account on FICS, but I will quickly check tonight to make sure it is functional. Just to double check: it starts 7 am UTC+1, correct? that will make it 1 am EST ( midnight Chicago time) if I am not mistaken. That means, I may need to go to sleep at some point leaving the account unattended. I feel pretty confident that it won't be a problem with the script I wrote. I tested before with HGM's tourneys and leaving the computer unattended for even a day on FICS an ICC. Is there going to be a problem? Will you be able to start up the matches? should I send you a zippy password? Is it even allowed to leave it unattended?

The way I read rule 2a1, I don't think you're supposed to leave your account unattended. Which is a shame, because I can't really participate in a tournament that starts at midnight local time without going to sleep during the later rounds. I'd also appreciate clarification on this issue.

If the author/operator has to nod off for a round or two, that is fine. They would just need to make sure someone has the zippy password to start a game, or resign a game if played between rounds.michiguel wrote: I will.

My only concern is if the connection dies and no one is there to restart the client, I would have to forfeit the game to your opponent.
I know I will be up for the entire event

in FICS, Is there any way to prevent that other people challenge my engine?
Something like "accept only if the challenger belongs to this group?"
If we know the names of all the participants in advance, I can put a superformula with all the names listed. That may be overkill, I don't know...

Re: info for operators on fics
if it run through the TD system there, mamer, i think they might have an option to prevent non tournie games, not sure. using mamer might not make it possible to do the pairings peter wants and he might not have access.
the thing the operator has under his control, is to set a formula that makes it less likely someone can challenge it. i.e. if the time control was 60 10 unrated, do set formula time=60 & inc=10 & unrated & computer
you only have to worry about computers challenging you to 60 10 unrated. Turn off any auto rematch scripts.
Also on icc you have to type set noautologout 1 to not idle out. On fics i believe comptuer accounts automatically do not idle out. But word of caution, i have run bots on fics, the overall chances of keeping a connection open a long time on fics, without disconnect, are less than icc. I dont know if this is just me, but on icc i can easily stay on for days. On fics its not as garanteed and i'm seldom on for more than a day without disconnecting and sometimes much shorter.

Re: info for operators on fics
If you grab the latest Winboard/XBoard version, it sends a "date" command to FICS to keep the client alive. You just have to set the -keepAlive [n minutes] on your command line.adams161 wrote:if it run through the TD system there, mamer, i think they might have an option to prevent non tournie games, not sure. using mamer might not make it possible to do the pairings peter wants and he might not have access.

We will be using mamer during the tournament. It is easier for pairing and getting games started. Being 9 rounds, I am sure that #1 will play #2 at some point. The mamer system is quite good at pairing.

Re: info for operators on fics
Do you have a different mamer than the open-source version, then? The one I got with Lasker-2.2.3 was absolute cr*p. When player A had had three blacks in a row, and player B three whites, it would happily pair A with black against B with white...
Turned out it did not only fail to update the 'consecutiveWhites' and 'consecutiveBlacks' counters each round, but was also actively clearing them before every round...
