Testposition from Naum 4.1 match, not too difficult

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Here is a, more or less randomly chosen, testposition that shows a small shortcoming in Stockfish, from the match that Paul Watson played on his octal between Stockfish 1.6.3 and new Naum 4.1. Thanks for the match Paul!

Stockfish's king is lured far into enemy terrain and even though Naum with White does not have a Queen anymore, going this far behind enemy lines without assistance is not without its dangers. But Stockfish does not compute any King Safety when the opponent does not have a Queen... It does not see it.

Naum plays 29. f3+! and gets a winning advantage while Stockfish evaluates at 0.00

It is not hard to change King Safety so that even situations with less mating potential are considered, but the difficulty lies in the re-tuning.

It was already hard to change any of the parameters without upsetting the equilibrium, but in situations with less material not all the default values will apply. Stockfish will give too much value to the attack or too little for instance, depending on King Safety changes, in this position.

This is a reasonable try for a new version of King Safety in Rainbow Serpent but it has flaws in other positions and the "other" positions are always much more numerous :)

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

It does! I had not really expected that. Thanks Louis. Did not check with Stockfish vanilla though... So what I should have said is that Stockfish does not really see the danger, it should have avoided the position assuming the King march was not forced. Only at ply 21 does the eval for White go up enough. Choosing f3 early here is good though! It does see the move but under the game conditions would have needed more time for the King to not go strolling in a mine field, whistling a dainty tune, looking at the flowers, two powerful knights on horseback trying to protect him even in the enemy gardens but they are outnumbered...

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first

are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

On further inspection, things are not so clear anymore, meaning I'm not sure the game is an example where King Safety computation with no enemy queen is really helping, in general, or is really a factor that is decisive here. So far it seems that the position might still be held but if so only if Black plays very precise. In the game, Stockfish with Black may have made the fatal mistakes only later, in the analysis the eval stops short of a winning advantage, for both version of Rainbow Serpent, the one using King Safety and the one without it. But these two have different PVs and also very different start evals, only much deeper the evals sort of converge.

The classic version is the more simple, intially thinks the eval is flat but if it is a draw, that is actually accurate. I let it run long, 27 ply analysis after some twelve hours and the eval is then higher. No King Safety is included in this.

The version with King safety thinks the King retreat to f5 is better, much less spectacular though, not trying to push a passed pawn through with King support on the sixth row although it is really still a middle game.

There are some other changes in search and even the Bishop pair material imbalance tables were changed to make this version behave better, in the Morozevich - Pelletier testposion especially that also deals with a similar problem, leafpositions with one side having two Rooks and the other a Queen, so King Safety is computed only for one side if there is still enough material on the board. In the end comparison it seems the King Safety changes are better not incorporated in the line, or maybe I should make two different versions :)

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.
