i wanted to witness a match between junior 2010 with the white pieces and komodo with the black, in the hopes that the contrasting styles would lead to something interesting. it did, in komodo's favor. pitting a brand new engine against a contemporary 'legacy' engine is interesting in its own right, but here junior played more like it was 1999. what is amazing to me is how simple & natural komodo's play is, and how easily it squeezes junior to death. komodo was using shredder GUI and out of book after 5 moves (i think this is due to my GUI settings from a prior eng-eng match), and i stopped junior's book after move 9.
i encourage you to C&P this game and scroll through it to see what i am talking about. while nothing is spectacular it was incredible to me to watch komodo's moves, virtually each of which was part of a larger, connected plan. this contrasted massively with junior's play, which was completely aimless the entire game. and this in a najdorf!
junior was also given 3CPUs with below normal priority, komodo 1 with high priority, ponder on, 1GB hash each.

i'm afraid junior's viewpoint is lost in the ether, unfortunately, as i did not save the game & merely lucked into shredder keeping it on file since i didn't clear it.
also, seeing komodo's computer evals forces you to realize it is not in fact a very strong human handling the black pieces, something the game itself never gives away.

Thanks Jim....indeed it reminds a lot of Karpov's playing style when he was at his primeJim Ablett wrote:I published the game with ChessThreatre and uploaded it here for easy viewing >

Jim.

Never the less,I must admit that Deep Junior played a lot of aimless moves and at certin points it realy looked like an -2000 Elo engine

Cheers,

agreed on all counts, in fact i said the same in another thread today -- komodo is the karpov of the computer chess world.
junior can look brilliant or idiotic depending on the day. today was a fool's day for him against the worst possible foe. and of course thank you jim for uploading it.

Re: Komodo is simply amazing :)
Komodo has some nice evaluations. It is somewhat slow compared to other engines, but if doesn't fall for any tactical tricks due to being slow, it can make any engine look like a patzer. The MP version will be very interesting as that will give the engine a little more breathing room with regards to speed.

What is Komodo? Commercial? Free? Open source?
Human chess is partly about tactics and strategy, but mostly about memory

Free, but not open source. Probably going commercial when it's stronger.
