Mobile Chess Server data usage.

Post by Cubeman »

I plan to get a new mobile phone that will allow me to play chess online at FICS.I have the PocketGrandMaster interface and currently use my dedicated PPC to play when ever in range of a Wi-Fi spot. But unfortunatly my job requires alot of travelling and need access to internet at places with no Wi-Fi.The only way around this is to sign up to a data plan from one of the local telecomunication companies. The standard offering is 10MB for $1 a day. They say that 10MB is equivalent to about 300 text only emails, 100 browed web pages, 12 minutes of You-Tube.
I imagine that playing chess online would not use much data but am not completely sure.Does any one know how much data is used when say playing non stop blitz for about 2 hours?

I know that for the Blackberry it is quite expensive. I had a friend who had roaming and was travelling abroad only to receive a nice $1000 + bill. Apparently the Blackberry has some communication overhead that can add up to quite a lot. Personally I would not trust anything that gives access with a counter. There is absolutely no way you could argue about the usage, you just have to pay the bill. Usually you can get an unlimited data plan. Locally I have to get another number for unlimited data which is really stupid because I have to change SIM card and lose phone access. It is about $50 a month for unlimited access at around 512K speed and $120 for 7.2 mbps ... I actually couldn't find much difference between the 2 speeds because you never get the 7.2mbps and most likely it is something between 300K and 1mb.

I don't plan to go overseas, I am a Taxi Cab driver and want to play online when I have not got a fare.In center of town there are many free Wi-Fi spots which I can connect to,But in the suburbs there are no free spots. That is why I need a 3G cellphone network.
Would blitz online be O.K over a 3G network, or is it too slow that I would find myself losing on time?

Just got a 2nd hand iPaq 612c cellphone and tested out the PocketGM with FICS connection.I must say that I am pleasantly surprised how cheap it is to use.My mobile plan allows casual data usage of $1 NZ for 10 mb in 24 hours.Played on FICS for about 2 hours and had only used 1 mb of data so in 24 hour period I would find it hard to exhaust my $1 NZ.Beats paying fees for wi-fi hotspots if all you want to do is play chess online. Also the speed of play is similar to a home broadband wi-fi connection, very little lag and continous connection even when travelling from A to B.
