Configure should have detected the missing xaw header files and print an appropriate diagnostic.

Well I don't quite remember what happened. At one point we were communicating about a release of xboard and I think I emailed you a version with a newly generated configure.ac which tried to sort out the xaw/xaw3d mess. Perhaps it didn't behave as expected. In any case I have long since deleted all this.
But checking if a certain header file or library is present in configure.ac
is quite trivial (AC_CHECK_HEADERS, AC_CHECK_LIB).
