White-Black Stat

Post by Vinvin »

From the big list http://home.scarlet.be/vincentlejeune/r ... -beta3.txt , I took engine with more than 3000 games, 69 engines I made a stat with color difference :
Advantage for white +4.68 , Extremes :Crafty 23.3 (+23) and Protector 1.4.0 (-18, yes 18 points less with white !!).

(Stat on 652'297 games)

Thanks for your work which provides interesting results! Up to now I believed that the white advantage were much bigger on average, i.e. about +30 Elo points, resulting from white usually scoring about 54-55% in high-level games between almost equal opponents.

What kind of time control was used for the games in your DB?

Did you use BayesElo for the rating calculation? If so, how did you address the fact that BayesElo already has some built-in handling for the influence of colors?

Btw, Crafty 23.3 has +32 as white/black difference.

In humans games, the difference is bigger. Some assumptions : 1) humans play better opening than computers, they tend to maintain the advantage from the beginning ; 2) humans have a psychological influence that with white it's logical to have a little +/- and black don't try hard to win.

It's 6 big datagbases compilation :
CEGT : AMD64X2 4200+; 40/20 (Pond.OFF)
CCRL : Athlon64 2.4 GHz; 40/40 (Pond.OFF)
WBEC : Various; 40/40 (Pond.ON)
IPON : Phenom2 3.2 GHz; 5m+3s (Pond.ON)
ChessWAR : Intel Q9300 2.5 Ghz;40/40 (Pond.ON)
SWCR : Intel Q9550 2,83GHz; 40/40 (Pond.ON)

Yes, BayesElo ... I forgot it already use a correction. May be, Rémi Coulomb can tell us how much It use ...

In self-play I find usually 53-54% for white, both with Fairy-Max and with Joker.

The default value for the "advantage" parameter in BayesElo is 32.8 Elo points. You could try whether setting it to 0 (command "advantage 0" prior to "mm") makes any difference in your computation (I would expect a significant difference). You can also let BayesElo calculate the "white advantage" value from the given game database, by replacing the usual "mm" command by "mm 1", and compare the result to yours.

EDIT: Did you use weighted averaging (by number of games per engine) to obtain the +4.68 average?
