Also-Rans Rating List Update - June 4, 2012

I have updated the Also-Rans Rating List. I also have updated the database and provided the download link, added statistical information, and provided a link to a Google spreadsheet that contains information on each engine found in the rating list.

I have added more games for Blikskottel 0.8, Eden 0.0.13, Gargamella 0.5.0, Gullydeckel 2.16pl1, JChess 1.0, Kanguruh 1.93, PLP 1661571, and Chad's Chess 0.15. Also, I have added CmcChess 2.27, Freyr 1.09 64-bit JA, and Mephisto MM5.1 to the list.

Hi Adam,

I like your site. Also I'm glad someone pays attention to the lower rated programs, these are ones I can play interesting games against, the top tier programs are just too good for me to play against.

These engines are the appropriate opponents for most of us. Some people will find good engines to play against at the top or middle of the list. The right engines for me are near the bottom. Very near the bottom

I think that what I like best about testing these engines is that I can understand many of the moves they make, both correct moves and mistakes.

I had my also rans tourney last month, under 1600 at home in my spare time. If there was more time, I would have played some games myself as in the past. It was a fun tournament, and I included personalities from Kasparov's Gambit by EA.

Here is an under 1600 tournament that was recently completed mostly involving winboard/uci programs played in Arena with oldies included. Two computers were involved. Also included were Chessmaster personalities which didn't show real well, and personalities from Kasparov's Gambit played in DosBox. While this is a disadvantage, its the only way for me to include this program. The Picasso personality did fairly well, and its assigned rating is approximate as it performs in DosBox. Chess Rikus 1.458 was the ultimate winner, and SCP10p was second. I have seen these programs on some listings as higher than 1600, but not on mine previously until this tournament ended.... Zotron 2003 7.7 was having problems in Arena 3. This was a seven round swiss.
