CCRL time controls

Post by drbob »

Hope this question isn't too off-topic for this forum.
The CCRL website describes time controls in terms of, for example, 40/4 or 40/40. That's pretty straight-forward. So 40 moves in 4 minutes or 40 moves in 40 minutes. But isn't something missing from that description? Like, "the rest in X minutes," something like that? Could someone take a moment to clarify this for me? Kind of a newbie question but there you have it. Any help would be appreciated.
Kind regards,
Robert

I don't think there is something like that...
It's 40/40+40/40+40/40+40/40... indefinitely.
So in theory (except for 50-move rule) it could last indefinitely.

But this is no different from Fischer TC, which also could last indefinitely.

Practically, in computer matches, average length is around 60-70 moves and practically never over 300.

Yes - we use repeating time controls.

40 moves in 40 minutes repeating or 40 moves in 4 minutes repeating.
Of course, it should be mentioned that we benchmark our computers and use adapted time controls.
It's all explained in our weekly updates or on our site homepage.

Got it. And thanks to both of you, Graham and Ernest. Never occurred to me that the time controls would simply repeat, ad infinitum.
