The tournament can be followed more closely from the following link:

If you install TLCV (Tom's Live Chess Viewer) on your computer, you can watch the games live move by move. You'll also be able to chat to others following the tournament in the chatroom there.

Graham, don´t be surprised if Houdini will not win. It doesn´t play Scandinavian defence well (1.e4d5 2.exd5 Dxd5). I vote that Critter will win this time :)

I think the Scandinavian is just a bad opening for computers, generally.

Not that Black is losing, necessarily, but if White plays well according to theory it is difficult IMO for Black to do better than draw, and Black can easily lose.

One main line Black is doing badly in is 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qa5 4. d4 Nf6 5. Nf3 c6 6. Bc4 Bf5 7. Bd2 e6 8. Nd5 Qd8.

A find a lot of positional tricks in this opening playing the black side....

I don't know about computers playing against each other the scandinavian defence, but it's diabeled as an opening in most of the premium opening books....

Should be interesting to see whether you're right. :)

The lines being used are predominantly in the Mieses variation (2....Qxd5), which is my preference when I play
There are no 2.....Nf6 lines, as that variation doesn't interest me.

The tournament stats should be interesting. :)

There are 31 lines in the opening book used and they're being played sequentially, so we'll get eight or nine games per line.

Looking forward to seeing whether or not the engines can contribute to opening theory. :P
