Strelka 5.6 x64 v Houdini 3 x64 In A 40/40 Showdown

Post by geots »

Enough blitz is being played already, and in theory according to a rating list I trust- Strelka picks up around 25 to 30 elo against Houdini when you move from blitz to 40/40.

The main problem with that could be that no one remembered to tell Houdini!

At any rate here are the first 15 games of the 50-game match:

XPS 8500 Intel i5-4 True Cores
Fritz 11 gui
1CPU/64-bit
128MB hash
Bases=NONE
Ponder_Learning=OFF
Perfect 2012b.ctg w/12-move limit
40/19 Repeating (Benched to adapt to 40/40)
Match=50 games

Code: Select all

Houdini 3 x64      +6/-1/=8
Strelka 5.6 x64    +1/-6/=8

You know- you switch engines, you switch time controls over and over, and Houdini doesn't bat an eye. He just smiles and keeps on coming.

Strelka 5.6 v Houdini 3- 40/40 Showdown- After 28 Games!

Post by geots »

13 more games in, on the way to 50.

XPS 8500 Intel i5-4 True Cores
Fritz 11 gui
1CPU/64-bit
128MB hash
Bases=NONE
Ponder_Learning=OFF
Perfect 2012b.ctg w/12-move limit
40/19 Repeating (Benched to adapt to 40/40)
Match=50 games

Code: Select all

Houdini 3 x64     +10/-2/=16   64.30%   18.0/28
Strelka 5.6 x64   +2/-10/=16   35.70%   10.0/28

Neglected to include the elo difference, but anyone who can add 2+2 and come up with 4 can figure that. Really a non-factor anyway.

In hindsight, Robert could have just saved Houdini 3 for a later time. Look at all the rating lists you choose to, but when the time comes to separate yourself from your hard-earned money- who's gonna bet against Houdini 2 at any time control against any engine.

I think that there is a free program that has good chances to beat houdini2 at long time control.

The name of it is houdini1.5
This opinion caused me not to buy houdini2 but I bought houdini3 that I believe to be stronger than houdini1.5 at all time controls.

Uri, I find no fault with what you say. I completely agree 100%.

40/40 Showdown: Strelka 5.6 v Houdini 3 At 45 Games!

Post by geots »

When the time comes for Houdini to enter the "Computer Chess Heavens", it is painfully obvious he prefers to make the journey alone.

XPS 8500 Intel i5-4 True Cores
Fritz 11 gui
1CPU/64-bit
128MB hash
Bases=NONE
Ponder_Learning=OFF
Perfect 2012b.ctg w/12-move limit
40/19 Repeating (Benched to adapt to 40/40)
Match=50 games

Code: Select all

Houdini 3 x64     +62    +11/-3/=31   58.90%   26.5/45
Strelka 5.6 x64   -62    +3/-11/=31   41.10%   18.5/45

Strelka has 5 games left to make the results look a bit better-

Strelka 5.6 v Houdini 3 40/40 Showdown Has Concluded!

Post by geots »

This 50-game match has reached its conclusion. No matter your POV, the score "is what it is." But be aware in the last 22 games of the match, Houdini only managed 2 wins. Problem is- Strelka only managed 1 win. And 35 of these 50 games were draws. As CCRL 40/4 and 40/40 rating lists tell you, Houdini's elo strength difference drops the slower the time control you use.

Still- having said that- Houdini is certainly stronger than Strelka, and still the strongest engine out there. There is no arguing that.

XPS 8500 Intel i5-4 True Cores
Fritz 11 gui
1CPU/64-bit
128MB hash
Bases=NONE
Ponder_Learning=OFF
Perfect 2012b.ctg w/12-move limit
40/19 Repeating (Benched to adapt to 40/40)
Match=50 games

Code: Select all

XPS-i5, 19'/40+19'/40+19'/40  2/26/2013

Houdini 3 x64     +63    +12/-3/=35   59.00%   29.5/50
Strelka 5.6 x64   -63    +3/-12/=35   41.00%   20.5/50

Enjoyed running it-
