You can run a java chess engine in UCI mode like the CuckooChess, see in the site http://web.comhem.se/petero2home/javachess/

i think others java tools, programs and engines exists ...

For interpreted languages you usually have to run the interpreter (java.exe?) with the engine source file as argument for the engine command. So the more general command to run an engine is

winboard -fcp "ENGINE COMMAND" -fd ENGINEFOLDER

What ENGINE COMMAND should be you can read in the engine documentation. There is nothing that can be said about this in general, as it could be anything. Even for engines that do have a .exe you sometimes need a more elaborate engine command.

Ok, I think I just found & fixed the bug that was causing problems with Jazz in the past few tournaments. Hopefully I remember to stop by my computer around 9 to join the tournament.

Critter was on fire in in this tournament !

I haven't had a lot of luck with Critter on 6 cores up to now in these tournaments. I did two things differently this time - I googled the split depth parameter, and discovered that the default of 5 was thought to be OK for 4 cores, but with more cores it may be beneficial to increase it. So I made it 6. Secondly, I decided to use a much shorter book, to let the engine do more of the work. Did either of these make a difference ? Who knows, it certainly seemed like a different engine, but on the other hand maybe it just got lucky this time :)

Really annoyed that Jazz appeared to be running smoothly and then failed to start properly in its penultimate game (against Rookie) and then promptly played nice on the following game against Stockfish.

Doubly so because Jazz' log file is just

Code: Select all

# game 6
< random
< post
< hard
< ping 11
> pong 11
< level 0 5 1
< computer
< name Rookie
> Illegal move: name Rookie
< rating 1701 1825
> Illegal move: rating 1701 1825
< time 30000
< otim 30000
< e2e4
< result 1-0 {Jazz resigns}
< force
< ping 12
> pong 12
< memory 1028
< cores 4
< new
# game 7
Apart from the clearly faulty and misleading "Illegal move:" error messages (I'll fix those anyway) it doesn't give a clue as to what's going on...

Except... I don't see where I'm switching off force mode in the code. As far as I can tell I never actually do (except when given "go") which should create problems in general.

Anyway, fixing that and keeping my fingers crossed. I may try playing some games over the ICS to verify that it's fixed.
