VERY INTERESTING Stockfish vs. Houdini Match Has Begun!

Post by geots »

I have begun what I think will be an interesting, to say the least, match between Houdini 3 x64 & Stockfish 290613 x64 SSE4.2 It is being run with each engine having 6 Cores- at 40/19 repeating, which is the benchmark which adapts it to CEGT and CCRL 40/40 repeating.

I have no clue actually, as I have never run this Stockfish version, nor have I seen much of any results with it. I know that Stockfish seems to do better at the longer controls, and I just have a strange feeling that this version might do well. Houdini is No.1- no argument there. But this may be one of the first matches I have ever run where I would put NO money on Houdini to win it. We shall see. (It is set for 50 games- which may mean some breaks along the way. (After all, the engines need to eat.)

Alienware AURORA_R4
Intel i7 w/6 True Cores

Fritz 11 gui
6 Cores/64bit
256MB hash
Bases=NONE
Ponder_Learning=OFF
Perfect 2012b.ctg w/12-move limit
40/19 Repeating- benchmarked to adapt to 40/40
Match=50 games

To add: Any unexpected bugs affecting play and I will switch to version "230613"- which can hold its own against pretty much anything I have seen.

Latest development Stockfish is about 35 Elo stronger than SF3.

That's Critter territory.

Should be a very interesting match ! Always good to see lots of fast cores at a longish time control.

Matthew, I thought SF3 was already stronger than Critter.

Houdini 3 x64 v Stockfish 290613- THE FIRST UPDATE!

Post by geots »

As promised, the first update after 12 games. As we speak- in game 13 Stockfish has a very nice position with the black pieces.......

Code: Select all

Stockfish 290613 64 SSE4.2    +4/-1/=7
Houdini 3 x64                 +1/-4/=7

I studied a number of games with a number of Stockfish versions. And so far- what I am referring to- the best ones seem to all have this in common. So far, and I STRESS "so far"- this version seems to do it the best. No way I can be the only one who has noticed this.

The best way to describe it is, in the longer games, it reminds me of Pablo and his "Father" games. Somewhat impenetrable- at times almost "completely impenetrable". DIFFERENCE IS, when Stockfish sees the opening: bam, pow- it's over.

12 games into 50 (might as well say 13- no way Stockfish will lose game 13 with black) and we shall see what we see. This I know: It will require Houdini to play better chess than he has been playing to win. (I must have heard that a million times as well).

Enjoy-

Yes, it is well known that SF suffers at ultra-fast/ hyper-bullet TCs. However, at more tangible TCs (slower than blitz) that humans can better relate to, SF seems to be somewhat (not overwhelmingly) stronger than Critter, especially when taking account the newer development versions.

In any case, the context of this thread deals with a slower-than-blitz time control.
I doubt it needs to gain another 35 points to be in Critter territory.

What the Hell Do I know, But................................

Post by geots »

Game 17- Houdini playing the white pieces. Stockfish has moved both Rooks and his King is where he started- untouched- at move 30. Short-circuit? No respect for Houdini? The guts of a riverboat gambler?

Probably not the best way to play Houdini. We shall see.....................
