Chess Site (playing) Traffic?

Post by Cornfed »

I recall that once upon a time, there was a site that kept track of the number of people playing on various sites....probably 10-15 yrs ago.
Does anyone know if such information exists today? I cannot find anything.

I play on Chess.com, Playchess (Chessbase), ICC (well, when they offer me the 3-4 months free a year to 'come back')...once in a blue moon on chess24 (can't stand the board graphics), and lichess.

Too late to edit, but I'm curious because my latest 'free month' at ICC ends tomorrow and I am wondering about a site like Chess24, particularly as regards the number of players between, say, 6pm cst (USA) and midnight and mainly players who are rated 2000 - 2400+ as well. Their membership is expensive (even with the prevalent 40% off 'deals')...hate to pay and then find there are not many reasonably good players available when I would normally be playing.

Anyway, even if there are no sites (or info published) which show the # of players at any given time, even a good opinion by anyone would be appreciated.

lichess shows the number of games in play and number of players online, though I don't think you can filter by Elo.
In my browser, it shows these numbers on the startpage, to the right of the button "custom". It could be somewhere else though, depending on your screen size, currently it shows ~40,000 games.
EDIT: on chess.com it's apparently ~160,000 players (or 80,000 games in play).
