Even Bobby Fischer could not do it against a good player not because he cannot beat him but because I expect the good player to resign and not allow him to make checkmate.
Maybe in one game the good player can miss a mate in 1 but I do not see how it can happen twice in a row.
I also expect a good player to think more time and not lose in 2 minutes and the story does not mention a chess clock and playing bullet time control.
