Chess System Tal 2.03 upgrade

Chess System Tal 2.03 upgrade.

New in 2.03
fixes a rare crash (access violation) where an illegal king move — the king stepping backwards along a sliding checker's ray, or an undetected discovered check — could slip through legality checking, let the opponent "capture" the king, and corrupt the internal board. This affected both the AVX2 and AVX-512 builds (it was not AVX-512-specific). No change to playing strength or settings.

In 2.02
Fixes issue some people had with numbers of cores and threads, fixes the random and occasional hang issue. Might be slightly faster than the original, but apart from that no internal changes.i did manage to sort out the .nnue.bin include into the compile, the old version was compiled with .nnue.bin inline but by a terrible workaround because I couldn’t work out how to get round the Microsoft compiler bitching about include.bin file size. Now fixed. Executables are now much smaller.

Comments and gripes in this thread only please. I’ll attend to any issues raised in first few days if any (for example thread_max is set to 64), and might then create the EAS and Extreme versions.

Just a little note, since I’m laptop/internet nomadic I’ve little access to either the original sources or the original xxx.nnue’s. The main source was reconstituted from GitHub and Ed, neither (I suspect) match entirely the old release version, but heavy testing indicates the engine is the same, almost, it is probably actually a dev version from after the original release but seems equivalent, as far as I can tell. Nnues’s were a different matter altogether, none available at all, and finally reconstituted by reverse engineering them out of old release versions. This seems to have worked. If not, generating exact feature and bug fixed copies will have to await me being back in France.

I would guess that since I wrote it a couple of years ago now, it will have been overtaken by one hundred new engines. But we'll see, only in adversity is future progress.

Hi Chris,

I just tested version 2.04 using the Shredder GUI. Unfortunately it still crashes. The full UCI log is below. It crashes on the line:

I'm almost certain this is due to the engine either expecting the "moves" keyword after the FEN, or expecting more fields in the FEN.

I hope it can be fixed. Thanks for the wonderful engine.

Yes, confirmed. Its the FEN parser, was expecting two more fields in the FEN, I had thought that was tested for and covered, but apparently not. Who gave it the 4-field FEN, you or the GUI?

Thanks for that one, Steve. Appears to be the Shredder GUI send four part FENs, which is a bit naughty imo because then the engine doesn’t get the 50 move rule count, but, anyway.
Actually the old source had been marked with this Shredder GUI issue and was allegedly fixed but I could never test it because no Shredder GUI to test it with. Should work now.
