Running Chess Genius 1 under XP?

Post by Wardy »

Hi All,

Has anyone managed to get Chess Genius 1 running natively under XP Home?

I downloaded it from Ed's site (thanks Ed & Richard!) along with v2 & v3 which both work fine.

Running Genius 1, I get a garbled display on my Ati x1950pro. I have tried running in compatibility mode but it's always the same. I have managed to get it running under Dosbox but don't seem able to expand the box to fill the screen (willing to accept I'm no expert with Dosbox!)

Ideally I'd have it running without a cycle sapping emulator, can anyone help?

I also noticed included in the v1 download there's a calling card from some hackers? Weird?

Cheers

Paul

Here it works perfect under XP prof. (P4 1.8 GHz and Geforce 3)

do you have cg.exe or cg1dos.exe?

cg.exe doesn't work here; gives a copy protection error...

Thanks for the reply Robert, The download only has a CG.exe file to run unfortunately :(

Where can I download the cg1dos.exe you have to try?

CG1 is a dos program (~1993) most likely by the date, so we presume the executables cg.exe amd cg1dos/exe are the same. Try to get this old program here: http://gambitchess.com/progr.htm

A "Museum of Chess Programs". I hope this helps.

this is, were i got the cg.exe-version from.

But i just found out, that i get the protection error only on this computer and only when run from drive C: (from D: without problems!)

On a different computer from C:; also no problem! :?:

cg1dos.exe is about 27 KB smaller than cg.exe (61608 vs. 88303 Bytes), but it claims to be the same version (1.00 from 04 Dec 92)

And the book-file has the extension .cg1 instead of .boo

@Paul: If you want, i can send you cg1dos.exe and the book file to your mailadress.

I don't know, if it solves your problem, but it's worth a try...

best regards,
Robert
