Cute, but not too difficult. Main Line... 1.Kd6...d2 2.Kc7...d1Q 3.Ra6+!...bxa6 4.b6+...Ka8 5.b7+...Ka7 6.b8Q Mate.

Terry

P.S. The RS -2200-X and Mach III appear to be very slow to figure this one out. It should only take seconds, even on very slow hardware.

Hi Steve,

This position looked familar; Is it from a game by Capablanca?

Do you have the game score? Who played Black etc.?

I use to love Capablanca but haven't reviewed any of his games, probably for than 20+ years!

In fact when I was really active in chess, I learned much from studying his games. I remember a fellow commenting on my play back in 1983, and he said after the game, my play was reminiscent of Capablanca.

I took that as the highest compliment at the time!

The Great One Regards,
Terry

I did have the 6098 for the better part of a year back in 1989, but I sent it back and it was replaced by another defective 6098!

After a long telephone conversation with Fidelity Electronics in Toronto, I convinced them to replace the 6098 with the 6113.

So in fact I have the Designer 2265 Mach III Master.

It runs perfectly to this day and its in top condition, no signs of wear and tear. Only the box is tattered. The certificate and manual in very good condition, and of course I have the original pieces and in perfect condition like the machine.

Say No to Defective Units! Regards,

Ah I see. I was captivated by his expertise in the endgame, and was also impressed by his Rock Solid middlegame play as well. Those who thought Capablanca boring, didn't understand chess!

He may not have been well known for flashy combinations, but he saw them well in advance, and on occasion did in fact produce masterpiece combinations, no unsound tactics like his nemesis Alekhine who bested him in his return match but refused to play him again on fear of losing!

He wasn't a Tal, he was too good or at least to true a player!

Immortal Regards,

Lasker was a great player, one of the best ever!

Pillsbury – Lasker [Game 41, p. 132ff]
St Petersburg (4), 29.07.1896

Position after 27...Kg8-h7

Here Pillsbury played 28.Kxa3?? Kasparov writes: "For some reason no one has pointed out the saving 28.Qf5+! 28...Kh8 29.Kb1! Rxa2! (29...Bxd4 30.Qf8+ Kh7 31.Qxa3) 30.Rxa2 Qb3+ 31.Kc1 Bg5+ (31...Qxa2 32.Qc8+ Kh7 33.Qc2+) 32.Rad2 Qc3+ 33.Qc2 Qa1+ 34.Qb1 Qc3+ with a perpetual check."

However Sorokhtin gives a winning line for Black: 28.Qf5+ Kg8 29.Kb1 (29.Qe6+ Kh8 30.Qe8+ Kh7 31.Kb1 Bxd4 32.Qe2 Qb4+ 33.Rb2 Bxb2 34.Qxb2 Qe4+ 35.Ka1 Ra6–+) 29...Bxd4 30.Re1 Qb4+ 31.Kc1 Qc3+ 32.Qc2 Qa1+ 33.Qb1 Rc3+ 34.Rc2 Be3+ 35.Rxe3 Qxb1+ 36.Kxb1 Rxe3 37.Rd2 Re5–+.

Karsten Müller: Sorokhtin's analysis shows that 27...Kg8-h7 does indeed win and so deserves an exclamation mark.
