Kasparov Electronic Chessman, manual?

Post by Odd Gunnar Malin »

I grabbed with me when I went to the beach a Kasparov Electronic Chessman (Saitek). Mostly because it is nice to play through games on, but now I also want to play against it. Its been some years since I used it last time so I can't remember how the level command work (a1-8, b1-8 etc.)

It looks almost like the Travel Chess on Saitek's site with the buttons somewhat rearranged but mine is probably a bit older.

Someone here with a manual (or good memory) that could tell me how to operate the level command.

hi Odd

while i do not own the Electronic Chessman i do own the Travel companion which i think is very similar

The manual for the TC is very strange as it only mentions that there are 64 levels which can be invoked by repeatedly pressing the LEVEL key
it will start on Square A1(level 1) and then go to H8
pressing the TAB key can make the level selection jump 8 levels at time
once you reach the desired level, simply make your next move as normal
the manual makes no mention as to the time controls for any of the levels other then to say that A1 is the easiest and H8 the hardest

when ever i go to the beach i always take this computer with me:

Yes, this look just like mine Chessman. To select the different levels I push the level button and then set (push) a piece on the wanted square (a1-h8).
I tried A1,A7,B1,C1,D1 and it blundered even a queen in 2 move comb. on D1 so these are beginner level. Then I tried h8 and h1, here it used very much time (move 1: 1 min., move 2: 3.15, move 3: more than 20 min. (i stoped it here)), this could be some fixed ply or mate search.
Now I play on F5 and it seems to play in nice tempo (1-2 min./move), though positional weak it hasn't blundered a piece yet (15 moves). I think I should be able to have some fun game around this level with change my opening moves a bit.

Thanks, I guess I must prepare before next trip. To trust any lcd thing (phone or touchchess) is hopeless in the sun. The size of this Chessman is nice but the level seams a bit low, at least if you want it to play in a normal beach rate (1 min/move). The Chessman also misses an opening book to vary its play a little.
