Hi,

For what purpose? For

- playing for your own development
- playing in engine matches
- analysis such as in postal chess

Best means differently depending on your intentions.

Thanks.

Majority of the people here would tell you that Rybka is the best.

As for free Engines,Get Toga or Glaurung.

Chessmaster 9000 or Chessmaster 10th Edition both have tutorials plus a variety of different strength "players" you can practise against.

When you ask for the best, we must ask:
"Best in what way?"

Rybka is probably the strongest commerical engine.
Glaurung is probably the strongest free engine (Toga/fruit variants are about the same).
The best commerical opening preparation program is probably Bookup.
The best free opening preparation program is probably SCID.
The best commerical engine+GUI+Database combination is probably Chess Assistant.
The best free engine+GUI+Database combination is probably Arena + Rybka 1.0 or SCID + Rybka 1.0.
The best human-readable explanation of move analysis is found in ChessMaster.

We need to know what you want to accomplish?
Are you trying to improve your game?
Are you trying to play online?
Are you trying to hold tournaments?

The best answers to your questions will depend on what you want to do with the program.

Yes, Chessmaster is a very good option, also inexspensive and readily available. Even the much older versions Chessmaster, some of which can be found for just a couple dollars, are very good.
