5:56 minutes for ChessTiger.
Good but still too worse in comparison with my Chessmaster 9000 personality XQ9, which finds it in just 15 seconds!!

CM9000 R1 also is equally good with just 30 seconds on my computer to find it!
Default CM9000 is worse than the above 2 personalities, but still amazing, as it finds it in 37 seconds only!

This is a Chessmaster position. :D

Very good results for Chessmaster XQ9, George!

Pro Deo personalities are also not bad in this position, for instance this is Test20.eng, one of the Excalibur personalities for Pro Deo 1.5;

Below are the settings for the Excalibur Test20, as an example of things to try, in case people want to try some of the many alternative options that Ed made for Pro Deo in some settings of their own, I must warn experimenters though that many of these settings below are from Pro Deo 1.2 and either do not work or sometimes have the opposite result of what you would expect in Pro Deo 1.5.

For instance setting
[Pruning = MISC_37] * Hash Table extension (-18%) OFF
enabled the PV extension in Pro Deo 1.2 but switches it off in Pro Deo 1.5 because the extension is now one of the default settings, no On switch necessary. I just haven't tried out all the switches so some of the old ones are still in there. There is a lot of documentation available on Ed's pages or in the archives, and it usually just best to try some things out.

I was here trying just some alternative Alpha and Beta settings and am trying to see if the internal incremental deepenening (IID) is working in Pro Deo 1.5, I'm not sure it did in Pro Deo 1.2

Well, maybe that could be changed. Is a Linux version possible for you to use? I don't use any special Microsoft stuff except for the compiler itself so it should be possible to transfer without too much problems, I hope....
Hello Peter,

My operating system is Mac OS X, but perhaps I would also be able to use a Linux version: I can run Linux inside a virtual machine in Mac OS X. This means that the chess programs will have less RAM and only one CPU, but apart from that it would probably work fine.

In principle, I could even install Windows now: I won a copy of "Windows Vista Ultimate" in Lodz. At the moment, however, I'm too lazy to try to install it, and I also fear that I lack the technical skills to protect my computer from viruses and other annoyances.

These are the intermediate minimatch-results against Glaurung:

I repeated the match against Glaurung 2-ε/5 with another Alaric version, with the same search and eval but capable of logging. Now Alaric played with its default settings. It was slightly handicapped in a few games where the logging was on, but in most games it was off. Rest of the match-conditions was the same.

First Run Alaric 70702 - Glaurung 2-epsilon/5, Shredder GUI, Shredder9.bkt for both programs, 6 minutes per game with 6 seconds Fischer increment. 128 Mb hash for both programs.

Alaric wins 1½-½ [+1 =1 -0]

Second Run Alaric 70702 - Glaurung 2-epsilon/5, Shredder GUI, Shredder9.bkt for both programs, 6 minutes per game with 6 seconds Fischer increment. 128 Mb hash for both programs.

Alaric wins 1½-½ [+1 =1 -0]

Third Run Alaric 70702 - Glaurung 2-epsilon/5, Shredder GUI, Shredder9.bkt for both programs, 6 minutes per game with 6 seconds Fischer increment. 128 Mb hash for both programs.

Glaurung wins 1½-½ [+1 =1 -0]

Intermediate Result Alaric 70702 - Glaurung 2-epsilon/5: 12-16

The result was slightly better in the first series of matches for the H50N4 settings. Alaric 70702 started off very well now but the last matches were clearly for Glaurung. Book openings by the way are repeated in a match. At some points in the Shredder 9 book the engine gets a chance to think on its own, from that point on the games may differ although there may still follow some bookmoves.

I have not followed these games in the second match so it is not possible for me to say if one version seemed to be playing better than the other. Also we are still trying hard to trace a bug that occasionally can crash the engine but is very hard to catch. There was one outright crash of the engine, strangely after a finished match.

In the mean time Peter has made a new version! I think soon we will hear more about it!

Examining some other possibilities for settings, I think there are not that many that are totally comparable in strength to the default ones but this one I think is reasonably good also in the latest version of the code. There are very small differences in solving the Alekhine - Sterk position with the last versions using H50N4 settings and the 70617 version of the code. There should not really be, as Peter has said they have the same search and eval, but my guess is there might have been some small side-effect from added logging code for example, I believe Harm Geert Muller wrote somewhere that adding very innocent looking pieces of code can do something to the alignment of important datastructures for instance, so suddenly the code executes a little faster or not. I can't remember much of the details. But for instance I now get in the latest versions this result in Alekhine - Sterk:

One ply and therefore about 45 minutes later because skipping the solution at 17 ply! The rest of the output is much the same and I think the settings behave much the same, the initial other reason I liked this output much is because the settings soon, after 5 seconds, settle on the strong 1. Kf1 that Alaric likes very much, and do not waver from it in the first plies before finding the actual solution 1. Bf6.

My other candidate settings besides "H50N4" I have called "Deep II" because they use more of the possible LMR pruning and Null Move pruning. That gives horizon effects I suppose, it needs more plies to find things but I think it is almost compensated for by additional speed. But it is very early days yet in testing this. I have not yet tested Alekhine- Sterk even but I did with the related "Deep I", only difference being that Deep I uses Lazy Eval for Nullmoves and Deep II does not.

This is the result for Alekhine - Sterk from Deep I:

Dit is Alaric 70706 "Deep"

Solved at 17 plies that is good!

I only played a few testgames yet but I think it is not much worse than the H50N4 settings, at least at this timecontrol it profits from the better speed to plydepth I suppose. In the second game against Glaurung it came very very close to a win in a Queen ending, displaying +8.77 for seventeen moves in a row but Glaurung miraculously escaped in the end with perpetual check. Very good from Glaurung! But it escaped by a hairs width! :P

First two mini-matches, only four games, that I have played under the same conditions as the above matches with Alaric 70617 H50N4 and Alaric Default settings against Glaurung 2-ε/5. All games both programs using Shredder9.bkt and no booklearning, so openings are repeated with different colors in a minimatch of two games:

Draw! By 50 move- rule. But I think Alaric must have had a way to win this! I have not studied it closely...

Intermediate Result Alaric 70706 "Deep II" - Glaurung 2-epsilon/5: 3½-½

This means statistically nothing and especially not at other timecontrols I think, but it is also not a bad sign! I think the settings may be about as good as the H50N4 which I, ever so slightly, would prefer over the default settings based on the available testgames but not enough of those. I have no idea though if Peter would consider using any other settings than the defaults.

These are the internal settings:

HistoryValue 50 [default = 60]
LMRMoveNumber 4 [default = 3]
LMRreduction 200 [default = 100]
LMRStartDepth 400 [default = 300]
NullReduction 400 [default = 300]
NullStartDepth 100 [default =200]

Now I don't know what this exactly means in actual games instead of using the settings in infinite analysis, because I think the engine uses slightly different settings there, at least that is what I thought I could see transmitted to the GUI, usings Shredder's Ucidebug option, I had not reported that yet to Peter but I suppose everything is intentional. So I'm assuming these are about the settings used in actual game play as well. If not then I will just have to see what happens after a lot more games.

Peter I think there is still a slight bug in the book code!! I think I better use e-mail for that..

Regards all, Eelco
