I have had a pleasant surprise with Neurosis, a program by Stan Arts, a member here. It is strong, has it's own GUI and tend to be speculative, attacking. I was duly defeated, of course.
The gui needs some improvement, though. Specially the clocks. It would be appreciated if they were putted at the top and not at the side of the board. The idea is to see the time, not just the clocks....
What about some way to take back?
Perhaps I missed the place or button to do so, but ....
Without take-backs we cannot play these machines regards

Re: Neurosis Experience
Heya Fernando,
Glad you like my program and thanks for trying it out.
The clock dials are just low-resolution texture-like things, no matter how I place them nothing will improve their detail.. but when you play a little you can see the red dials indicate seconds in a minute, light grey dials indicate minutes which is perhaps not so clear at short timecontrols but should be ok at longer ones, and a dark grey dial indicating hours. I just tried to make it seem like a classical analog chessclock beside the board with the buttons moving and everything..
When you're not in complete timerush you can just fly over and look toward the clock to get a better view. (you can move freely, hold right mousebutton and move mouse to steer/look into a different direction, and arrowkeys to move forward, sideways or backward, in the direction you're looking)
Hmm.. I don't like takebacks so never programmed them, when I make a blunder I tend to declare the game lost, then either start a new one or feel miserable the rest of the day.
But in my gui you can re-arrange pieces by clicking "edit boardposition", unfortunately that clears the gamehistory (like starting a new game from the new position) and clocks, so that's not so ideal.
Unfortunately I'm mostly considering my gui "done", it has been around for some years now. (Started writing it for the last version of my previous engine S-chess end of 2002, and fitted Neurosis into it at version 1.5 end of 2003, last change was at version 2.0 a year ago, when I added pondering to the gui.)
Here was a post, that I like most,
but it writes my gui for chess, is a complete mess,
hope that my program turns them to toast.
Limerick regards,
Stan

Re: Neurosis Experience
Well, Stan, there is not reason to consider your gui "done". As the engine, can be improved. I liked it very much and I am preparing myself for the revenge. This time I will put 100% of my strenght. Yesterday I played Neurosis after a very heavy and well drunk lunch, so my brain was playing at, i would say, 50%. Not that I will win at my 100%, but I will try to get a draw.
Please, consider the idea to put some extra effort in the GUI. I know most programmers does not give importance to that, bu we, fans, like to see a well done, pretty gui. And something new....
Looking forwatrd your effort regards
Fernando

2100 or 1200? Try something that you can beat without takebacks http://www.vicki.co.za/fern wrote:Doctor, I am a mediocre player without ambitions, so my rule is: ONE take back alouded....
