Is it assumed to be the best version, better than all the earlier betas?

where does one with limited resources start testing

It depends what you are looking for. For best computer vs. computer results with default settings I would start with the 061115 versions. If you enjoy tuning settings I personally like the 2.3 version best. The 2.3 version is the 070327 version with more UCI options and Search Focus set to 1. This version searches different than past versions of fruit including 061115 and older versions. One example of how different Fruit 2.3 is from past Fruit versions and other chess engines is that it does not extend any moves outside of PV. Yes this includes checks. Without a change in search philosophy taking out search extensions is of course not recommended. Detecting tactics otherwise beyond horizon depth must be done by another method.

thanks ryan.

I will be delighted if fruit manages to get to about the same strengh level as toga 1.3x4 and rybka 1.0 , and does so with its own unique style.
