Thanks Ryan. Of course I now wonder what HistoryDepth2 means! The depth where you allow double reductions?

Yeah it’s the depth for allowing reductions of 2 depth. It is a lot like what Toga does with its "Toga Extended History Pruning” only with minor differences. Looking at dates of files being changed Fabien and Thomas both tried almost the same idea without knowing each other had tried the almost the same thing. I saw the ideas as too similar and went another direction to make sure Fruit is not following a similar path as Toga.

Eelco de Groot wrote:Drawing against Rybka 1.2f is certainly not bad. :) I think my Gambit 006 settings are having a bit more trouble against Rybka 1.0 Beta. It is possible to try some combination of the settings, and maybe it is also possible to use Depth = 2 from Claudio also for Extended History Pruning. It certainly speeds the search up a little bit more but it may leave more holes.

So you could combine

History Depth 1 = 2 [Default =1]
History Depth 2 = 2 [*] [Default =1]
History Treshold 1 = 45 [Default = 40, 45 is a bit more aggressive History pruning]

This could still work, I have just set these options in Gambit 006 creating Gambit 007:
[---]
Is looks good this setting!

I have only a very slow PC and it can be that the statistic is wrong.

In my first match I played with this setting:

[ENGINE]
Name=Fruit 05/11/03e2
Author=Fabien Letouzey
Filename=C:\Programme\ChessBase\Engines\Fruit-051103\Fruit-051103.exe
[OPTIONS]
History Depth 1=2

After game 5 the result was this:

GUI= FritzGUI8
PB=OFF
TB=ON
Hash=16 MB, 16 MB

Code: Select all

P3 600, Blitz:6'+3"  0

1   Rybka 1.2f 32-bit   1½½½1   3.5/5
2   Fruit 05/11/03e2    0½½½0   1.5/5
Here leads Yesterday Rybka 1.2f with +2 after 5 games.

Today I make a exeperiment: I used Your Setting Eelco, sorry!
I named it Fruit 05/11/03e3 ;)

[ENGINE]
Name=Fruit 05/11/03e3
Author=Fabien Letouzey
Filename=C:\Programme\ChessBase\Engines\Fruit-051103\Fruit-051103.exe
[OPTIONS]
History Depth 1=2
History Threshold 1=45
History Depth 2=2

(Same conditions of course)

Code: Select all

P3 600, Blitz:6'+3"  0

1   Rybka 1.2f 32-bit    101½0     2.5/5  6.25
2   Fruit 05/11/03e3     010½1     2.5/5  6.25
Result after game 5 now today 2,5 - 2,5 (+/- 0)

It seems, that the new setting by You is a little stronger than the Setting by Claudio F.

Here this 5 games with Your Setting (Fruit Beta played much stronger and aggressive, Rybka 1.2f hold one locky draw in game 4):

Nice Setting!
Thanks Eduard! :) Nice to see some competitive games on Playchess with an old PIII computer Eduard.

Some loose comments in general:

I think of this also as a sort of sportive revanche of Fabien from people "running away" with his code. I'm not sure he is thinking about it that way as a wrongdoing, in one of the read.mes he describes that the first Fruit has also been laying dormant for several years so I think Fabien might still be working quietly every now and again on something new. It would be great to have something of a SMP version of Fruit, myself I could not use it but on Playchess for instance it would mean more people I hope doing some experiments. There will not be many people with big hardware willing to use single processor programs there. The consequence is that there are so many Rybkas, but Toga and Fruit could well be competitive with those although maybe not against the latest versions of Rybka2.

But using just a single processor they don't really stand a chance against a Quad.

I have not played many games yet with the settings but using them in Gambit 007 I think it works too. Something that seems to be in your games too, I think I saw a tendency for Fruit to play less draws using these options, but that could still be coincidence. For instance these two games with Fruit 05/11/03 Gambit 006 were draws:

So it seems from these games van Wely could have played a better game against Judith! Maybe it was a birthday present from Loek! :) I have not really looked at the games but these were the last ones played on my computer.

I hope people will try some more settings. Not that I am such a big fan of chess-server play myself, also because I am louzy at Blitz so I hardly ever play it, but I think there should be a room on Playchess just for single processor machines. Humans and Centaurs allowed too but only using one single processor machine, they could call it the Singles Room, a place for people and programs to meet!

I've played too few games yet to say if Fruit 05/11/03 Gambit 007 is really better than Fruit 05/11/03 Gambit 006.

Go, Wolkenlos PIII!
Go Fabien Go!

Eelco

P.S. A slightly provocative statement: Fruit 05/11/03 Gambit 007 seemed fairly good at predicting Rybka 1.0 Beta's moves. Not always of course. I think it mainly shows they are playing at about the same level and maybe some slight tuning effect against Rybka in general for many too as nobody wants to lose too heavily against Rybka. Of course Fruit 05/11/03 is from pre-Rybka times so it can't have been tuned against Rybka. :P Fruit 05/11/03 Gambit 006 is tuned a bit against Hiarcs 11 I think, so already there might be this domino-effect. 8-)

Amazing how good Fruit 05/11/03 already was at the end of 2005!

Dear Eelco!

Thanks for Your Statement, It looks real good.

Is "Fruit 05/11/03 Gambit 007" a compieled NEW Fruit-engine or only a Setting?

If is a Engine, please, can You send me it?

My email can find you on my Homepage in "Impressum" (see my Profile here).

Or direkt: eduard58(AT)web.de

Thank You for this nice Setting. I belive Fruit plays with this Setting 20 - 30 Points stronger than Default.

My Best!

Hi Eduard,

No it is only a setting for Fruit 05/11/03. I posted something about making the Gambit 006 settings in the Tournament and Matches Forum, but have not yet updated it with the settings http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15465

The settings for Fruit 05/11/03 Gambit 005 were in an earlier thread. I'll update the thread later. I wished I had a new engine for you!

One day I hope to do some chessprogramming myself but somehow I always seem to end up testing settings! I wished to write something of my own as far back as Sargon I in the eighties and the Sinclair ZX81, I have the book by Kathe and Dan Spracklen and even a book about assembly programming on the ZX81 but I think it is a bit out of date now :oops: I should get back to my programming studies, I already have collected quite a few links on C and several other languages, Basic, Perl, Python, Lisp, Haskell, D and what not so I can't go wrong there. :x One day I will write that new evaluation function! :!: :)

Best, Eelco

Image
ZX 81, 1 Kb Ram, 8 Kb Rom. The Basic was quite good, actually, even for doing mathematical calculations. Backing up your typed programs onto a cassette recorder was a rather tedious process but it worked. The additional Ram back-pack tended to get loose and all typed in data would disappear in a flash, that was the greatest problem with this machine. I think mine would still work but I have not tried.

Some people are still using the Sinclair ZX81 today!

Sure they do! I play using a single core Athlon64 and get plenty of wins or draws against duos and quads. Of course, the overall result is usually negative, but it is hardly hopeless.

I managed to shave a few seconds off of this solution time but the variation given is maybe a bit less good, Fruit now takes a lot longer to find 29... Be7 in the main continuation. Still with 29... Nd2 after 25...Lxh2+ 26.Kxh2 Th6+ 27.Kg1 Dh5 28.f3 Pf5 the variation follows the game between Miton and Ivanchuk for twentyone plies, so that is not too bad either!

Good enough to make this another version to be tested, Fruit 05/11/03 Gambit 008. Maybe this version is a bit less strong in longer time controls. Hard to say yet. But now I'm running behind in publishing the settings! This version has added

History Reduction 2 = 2 [Default = 1]
Knight = 101 [Default = 100]

First I need to play a few more matches with the Gambit 006 and Gambit 007 versions I think. The 007 version seems to play few draws so it will take a bit longer to have a more stable result, and I want to be able to compare the two versions against a few opponents.
