The Mandarin strikes again!

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Look at the following slightly fantastically ended games if you please, to watch the Mandarin at work!

Fruit 2.3.1 'Mandarin' 001 with some slight modifications, probably the same bugs but also occasionally brilliant, repeating the Biel 2007 opening position from the very first two (Blitz)games, now manages to stay out of its search instabilities and with some luck outplays Hiarcs both with White's and with Black's side of the position.

Hello,

It is a little quiet out there, everybody has gone to the beach I think, is anybody testing his own Fruit 2.3.1 settings in this weather or is it too difficult to do outside the ChessPartner interface? Or are the results disappointing? Shall I post the first Mandarin Anti-HIARCS settings (Sorry Mark) or does that spoil the fun? :P

Okay guys, here goes, this is how it looks in ChessPartner more or less, for Chessbase I think it is best to create a *.ucu file analogous to the one posted by Peter Eizenhammer in http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopi ... 88&t=15533

Fruit 2.3.1 'Mandarin' 001

*1) 16 (Mb I think) EGTB cache seemed a bit much compared to 64 Mb hashtables and some opponents without EGTBs
*2) Fast Eval seemed positionally a bit worse in just one testposition
*3) Play Style 'Gambit' should still be the same as 'Very Aggressive'

If everything is set correctlly this should be the output for Miton - Ivanchuk when using 256 Mb hash:

Eelco

One of the major changes is of course the use of Aspiration search, this seemed to work fairly well now but could be one of the cause of strange moves in the first games. There I had Search Focus set at one, now it is increased to two.

Another major change is using Pawn Duo settings just like in Gambit 008, but I accidently left the bonus for files b+c, f+g at two, when I corrected my mistake it seemed to make the PVs worse! So now it is left at two! I probably would never have changed it on purpose...

There are of course an enormous amount of settings possible but a lot of options I rejected in first testing because they simply did not solve the one testposition tried so far, or took more than twenty minutes for it when added to the Mandarin 001...

As I have only played two :!: games, I hope the results will not be too disastrous, at least I hope Ryan Benitez can learn something about the program from any games played. 8-)

I doubled the statistical relevance by playing two more games. Especially the second game was slightly fantastically complex! Well for me anyway!

Keeping my fingers crossed for any one move Kramnik calibre blunders, I was glad Fruit 2.3.1 'Mandarin' 001 was defending well in the first game, the position was equal but it was easy to make a mistake and all moves had to be made within ten minutes...

Two more 10 minute Blitz-games, Biel 2007 position 3 from the game between Loek van wely and Judith polgar. Especially the first one was an interesting spectacle and I think a very good game from Fruit 2.3.1 Mandarin 001 but maybe I'm prejudiced. The second game is not so well suited for any replaying because of the technical draw, but it was interesting to see both engines churn out about 100 moves in a few seconds, and Fruit still displaying depths of 23, 24 in the simple endgame positions :)

:) I only got the refence later Mircea! Lazarus is a very interesting project. If you compare the number of visits their site is getting compared to the CCC and if they are anywhere real, then our computer chess is really a very small field :( I am not really into the object oriented version of Pascal or C# for instance but I do believe in the language. And as a child cheetahs were always a favorite animal of mine. I wish I could run as fast as a speeding Jeep, 120 km/hr! :)
