Do you Touch the Pieces?
We have all heard of the "Touch Move" rule in chess. Which means if you touch a piece you have to move it. So here the is question, When playing a game online do you touch the pieces? By "Touch" of course I mean virtual touch aka: "Click" without moving the piece you touched.

Yes, and it proves useful. (I don't do drag and drop, I click the piece and then click the destination square).
For example, in one very unclear position, it's easier to click on the piece and then move to the destination square, and then keep thinking if the move is a good idea or not (as if the move was already made). If it is, I just click again and the move is done. If it isn't, I right-click and the piece goes back to where it was and I can think of another move.
Sometimes it's fool-proof, and sometimes I forget to do it and after the second click I notice I just blundered. I don't consider it as cheating, though maybe it gives me an unfair advantage against those that don't do it (But there's no way to know if my opponent is also doing it anyway).

Okay then, now I don't feel so bad. It's funny however when playing over the board I live by the "Touch Move" rule. When playing the computer via the DGT board I also use this rule. Yet when playing online I find I don't follow this rule. I do the same as you also. That is why I wanted to post this poll to see what others do.Ovyron wrote:Yes, and it proves useful. You had no reason to feel bad in the first place.AdminX wrote:Okay then, now I don't feel so bad. It's funny however when playing over the board I live by the "Touch Move" rule. There is no reason to invent new rules in order to blame yourself later of not following them.
I believe that most chess players also had cases when they did not follow the touch move rule in blitz games and if the opponent does not protest
against it they can also earn points by this behaviour.
I know that some months ago my opponent in a blitz tournament admitted the fact that he touched the piece but claimed that it is the first time that somebody tell him to move the piece that he touched in a blitz tournament and it seems that he thought that the rule does not exist in blitz.

Touching pieces in real-board games makes opponent nervous and angry. Touching your own screen pictures does not worry anybody, except making own bad habit. While I did not play any real game for ages, I feel that virtual bad habit did not influence my "never touch real pieces" habit.

sorry but if my opponent touch his own pieces it does not make me nervous and angry and before going to tournaments I did not play withAleks Peshkov wrote:Touching pieces in real-board games makes opponent nervous and angry. touch-move rule and never had problems in case that my opponent touched one piece and moved another piece.
I accept the rule as one of the rules of tournament chess OTB(including blitz) but this rule is never used by me or by my opponents in friendly games.

Re: Do you Touch the Pieces?
That is a tough question, Ted. I would like to say that i never did when i used to play online a lot (Hardly ever now). But i have to be honest and say yes, i have many times. Hats off to you, however- a very thought- provoking question. But you have to understand. I probably am the only one that does this, and i can get away with it because i never played blitz online. Just long games like 1 hour for each side to make all moves. So i set up a real rollup board with real pieces and transposed the moves to there. So you can see that i had the opportunity to move a lot of pieces around to see the outcome if i did such and such. I supose that is even worse than what you are referring to. I plead guilty and throw myself on the mercy of Judge Summers.AdminX wrote:We have all heard of the "Touch Move" rule in chess. Which means if you touch a piece you have to move it. However i can understand with computer chess on line that it
would make little diff. I play chess in the club and that rule is
a good one for me. I don't mind how long a person takes to
move while playing in person if its not just a simple move like
the second move of the game. It does bother me if a person
starts to make a move and than trys to take it back.
No Take Backs,
Gerold.
