George I have the same problem with Chessbase Light, Deep Sjeng 2.5 demo and with Scid. Recently everything with a .pgn extension changed to a Chessbase Light file here. I have a lot of those on my desktop it is a bit messy but of no further consequence for opening a .pgn because I changed the standard program for a .pgn back to Notepad as you probably also have done.

The icons did not change with it, I think this might be a Windows glitch somewhere? But I think there is a way around if you insist; I have tried it with Chessbase Light opening the .pgns

-George I see at this point that you deleted the name "Shredder Gamebase" as a description for .pgn filetype, grr :x , now I'm not sure if resetting the .PGN will reset to a Shredder Gamebase anymore as there is maybe not a Reset option? There should be I think if you only changed the name.
But I do not see a way to bring up a filetype to the bar myself, so maybe you have a different Windows option here?
  1. File Options -> File Types -> .PGN
  2. Reset .pgn files to Shredder Gamebases

Now .pgns are opened with Shredder again.
  3. Go to "Advanced" and change the icon.

There should be an option "change icon" I think also for Shredder. But the option is not available for Notepad files so you have to reset it to Shredder Gamebase. The path to the icons may only lead to other Shredder icons, but the standard Windows icons are for Windows XP under C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll
  4. Choose one of those if you want a Windows program to open your files and would like the proper icon.

All the.pgn icons should now change.
  5. Then change the standard opening program back to Notepad or the Windows program of your choice.
I just tried it here and this works under Windows XP. I don't know why not everybody has the same glitch or do they? A Windows glitch or does it have something to do with a previous deinstall maybe of another program that used the pgn files?

I think Tony's uninstall method should have worked in principle but if under File Options a pgn is like here a Notepad file with a Shredder, Chessbase, or Scid etc. icon a de-install maybe does not change the icons anymore.

Same thing happened here as with George - the icon associated with pgn files changed.

Hi.

This is set in the register /LOCALE MACHINE/SOFTWARE/CLASSES/.PGN

I don't know where you change it via an interface, but if you are somewhat a Windows Expert you can change it here. I don't think you can put whatever you want in here, but if you looks down the list under .../classes/* you wil find words you can set it to. Ex. 'txtfiles' for textfile icon.

You probably need to restart to get the changes to work.

Hi, what do you mean by "it brought it up in the bar"?

Note that there is the same problem with EPD files...

Someone else told me they were having the same problem with epd files. Bar was prob. a bad word to use, It is just a small rectangular space that had the name of the file type written in there. all i did was delete it out- but you cant highlight and delete, youmust do it letter by letter. Then when it is deleted and nothing is there, type in the file name you want- hit ok- thats it.

The only problem with Tonys theory is i dont know what you would delete that you could do without other than the gui, and i did not want to do that.

I havent figured out how to change the icon- but really i dont care. All i wanted to do was to change my pgn files back to where the file type said PGN Files and not Shredder Game Databases. and i was able to easily do that with the above mentioned procedure. The icon really doesnt matter to me

Hi George,

Okay, here on my computer Chessbase Light did not change any names of known filetypes.

With Shredder things are it seems different as also descriptions of files were changed. I think it is not very friendly Windows-programming to change icons and/or names of known filetypes without asking or without an obvious way to change it back again, but it seems common practice at the moment for Chessbase, Shredder, Deep Sjeng, Scid.

George I see no option here to change the names back is this on Windows Vista perhaps? Or maybe an option programmed by Stefan to change back names?

I think it should be possible to choose another icon in the Windows registry like Odd gunnar Malin said but you have to find out the correct name and directory of the Windows icon that you want, it may be in a different place in Windows Vista? Possibly they are not not in a different place but you never know...

I really cant tell you anything about Vista, but on XP it is very easy to change the file type to whatever you want it to say. I agree with you that we shouldnt even have to face this problem, but what can i say.
