If this fails, my proposal would be to remove the quote button from the software, if too many people are not capable or not interested to post carefully. I am not sure if it is possible... but probably the only way to get rid of the fullquotes

O.T.: Stop the fullquotes please!!
I notice that many posters don't care to edit the quote of the previous posting(s) they reply to. That causes repetitions of the same content again and again, and makes the discussions difficult to read and unnecessary large. 3 new sentences require 5 screen pages?!
It takes only a few seconds to edit the quote, to reduce it to the part you reply to. - Or simply press the button "reply" instead of "quote".
This is important! Because if the board gets more and more sloppy and unattractive, even more people will leave. It's really is a minimum quality requirement for a good, serious message board. No fullquotes, please take a bit more care. Thanks.

The number of useless fullquotes on a board is inverse proportional to the average IQ of it's members. Currently I doubt that we are 100+

Mike...
It's so tempting to tease you here...
But you're not wrong, and the the number of old posts vanishing faster is way higher when using the full qoutes.. But then again, a lot is posted, with no real content... where do we break it? Can we... should we?
Best,

The "signature" feature could go as well.
Reading some lousy quote or some smartass "wisdom" for the upteenth time get boring too
At least the "author" could update\ them once in a while......
just my opinion

No problem, Mike. It IS rather annoying.Mike S. wrote:I notice that many posters don't care to edit the quote of the previous posting(s) they reply to. For us, people that use the Flat View, quotes are vital to knowing who's answering what, but I agree that people should have the common courtesy of only quote what you're replying to (Like I do).Mike S. wrote:If this fails, my proposal would be to remove the quote button from the software, if too many people are not capable or not interested to post carefully.
Your beliefs create your reality, so be careful what you wish for.

What I have seen done at another board to reduce the excessive quoting problem is for the quote button to work the way I just quoted your post. That is, when quoting a post the quotes inside the post being quoted are ignored. This occasionally leads to quotes that make no sense, but not all that often. Sub-quotes can be added manually if it is really necessary.Ovyron wrote: I always update my signature...

I have no idea if this is available on phpBB boards, though.

Searching around, according to this thread the quote nesting limit can be set on board versions 2.1 and above. We are probably using one of the 2.0 versions, since those are the latest production versions. Version 3.0 looks like it is getting close to release.Dirt wrote:I have no idea if this is available on phpBB boards, though.
If and when we upgrade, I would at least like to try setting the quote nesting limit to a low value.
