ssdf and rating inflation

Post by Peter Hegger »

Hi all,
For Christmas I got CM 9000 and was curious as to its actual rating. On my comp it states its rating as 2834, which on my 2.5 ghz. P4 I was highly skeptical of. I was still somewhat surprised to see CM 9000 at 2710 on ssdf. Is my program really a super GM, or is the ssdf ratings list inflated? Alternatively, am I barking up the wrong tree by trying to compare human and comp ratings?
Thanks,
Peter

Running on my Core 2 Dual laptop after playing over 320 games at long time controls,The King 3.23 is rated 2664 Elo which what I assume it's real strength running on a home pc....

The ratings are only estimates, and the calculations only have meaning against the pool of opponents from which the rating was derived.

Besides SSDF there are also other lists such as:
http://computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/
http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/40_40%2 ... liste.html
http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/html/BayesianElo_ed14.htm

Be aware that these lists sometimes call the program ChessMaster, and sometimes "The King" since that is the name of the actual engine.

In any case, the CM engine is strong enough to beat 99.99% of the humans on the planet most of the time.

That probably already holds for micro-Max... Add 4 more nines for The King!

Only 0.009999%

But seriously: what would be the rating of the 6000th Human player on the rating list? Would it be above 2500?

No

There are even not 1000 humans with fide rating above 2500
fide rating does not allow me to find more than 475 players in one search(maximal number of pages is 25 and every page has 19 names).
Note that the search include also non active players like Robert J Fischer
and maybe dead people because I doubt if fide always know about the fact that a player is dead/

fast search in the fide rating list
http://www.fide.com/ratings/advseek.phtml

2540-3000 456 players
2500-2539 349 players
total number with at least 2500 fide rating 805 players

2465-2499 432 players
2440-2464 419 players
2421-2439 460 players
2406-2420 473 players
2400-2405 246 players

Total player with at least 2400 fide rating
2835 players

Note that all israeli players with israeli rating of at least 2330 have fide rating(the difference between israeli and fide rating is small and I did not do research which rating is higher in average) so I do not believe that there are many players who are at the level of 2400 or higher and have no fide rating.

I strongly doubt that and even if it's the case, many players will be pumped up from their national Elo ratings....
