Awww... that sucks! :( Well I have to give up for now, I will try posting in the programmers forum to get advice from the CCC hardware gurus and also start looking around for comparable hardware, hopefully some of my friends has that kind of platform.

Thanks a lot for your feedback though, it's good that this problem surfaced immediately! :-)

Hey Alessandro!

I've got 8 wheels in my box, so I'm wondering if your hamsters plan to breed anytime soon so that I can let them have a run in my box?

Hi Thomas,
thanks a lot for the offer! It seems you have more wheels than I have hamsters, but they're willing to go acrobatic and try the thing anyway! :-) I have prepared a version for you that is enabled for up to 8 threads:

http://www.ascotti.org/programming/ches ... Thomas.zip

There is another version in the zip file called "Extreme" which tries to speed up things by removing some safety measures, and I have not fully worked out all the details yet. If you decide to try that too, it might give erratical results or even crash, but if it works it should go faster.

Here are the results for Hamster non extreme version. Unfortunately there appears to be a problem when I try anything above 4 threads. Hamster just ends without any error message.

Processor is Intel Xeon X5355 @ 2.66GHz

Hi Martin,
3-3-3-8 latency!!!
I would be quite interested if you could post the FritzMark

Greetings Ernest,

I did this already when I first put together my machine. I saved a screenshot from back then which is still online.

If you are interested in computer hardware, here is the list of my components:

1 x Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 (CPU)
1 x Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 (Mainboard)
2 x Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500 1GB RAM
1 x Gigabyte GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB Fan-less, Heatpipes (Videocard)
1 x Antec P182 (Case)
1 x Antec Phantom 500 (Fanless PSU)
4 x Noctua NF-S12-800, 120mm Fan, 800RPM 8 dBA (Case fans)
1 x Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (CPU cooler)
1 x Noctua NF-S12-800, 120mm Fan, 800RPM 8 dBA (CPU fan)
1 x Western Digital Raptor 74 GB, 16 MB Cache (Harddrive)
1 x Western Digital Raptor 74 GB, 8 MB Cache (Harddrive)
1 x NEC ND-4550A (DVD/CD Drive)
1 x Corsair Voyager 8 GB Flash Drive (Contains 3-4-5 Nalimov Tablebases and 3-4-5 Bitbases)

Computer has run 24/7 since I put it together at the start of October, and has not crashed yet. It runs at 3402 MHz.

Hi, Alessandro!

In my Intel 2 Quad 6700 I have got the following benchmark. (Standard Fritz 10 calculations):

Relative Speed to P3 1,0 GHZ = 14,87

NPS = 7139

All four 'hamsters' work well, and the program seems very nice. Congratulations for your work!.

it seems the program does quite well on Intel quads! :)
Well all engines I've tried scale better on the quad Opteron (2 x dual cores) than they do on a single quad core Intel. But the Intel is so much faster to begin with that it is way faster in the end....
