90'+30" free engines tournament

Post by Spock »

Just for something completely different from normal CCRL work, a one-off tournament:

Hardware etc
Dual Core Opteron 185 2.6GHz
Arena GUI
90'+ 30" with ponder on
512MB hash each engine
5-men tablebases + Scorpio 5-men bases
book latest HS-12moves.abk
round robin, 4 rounds, 112 games

Engines
Colossus 2007d (UCI)
Crafty 21.6 64-bit (winboard)
ET Chess 13.01.08 (winboard)
Frenzee Dec07 64-bit (winboard)
Hamsters 0.6 (UCI)
Movei 00.8.438 P10 (UCI)
Scorpio 2.0 (winboard)
Trace 1.37a (winboard)

Notes
- Unfortunately some engines I wanted to use don't ponder, so couldn't be included
- ET Chess seems to only use 128MB hash, I've emailed the author to see if it can use more
- during testing I noticed some possibly unbalanced openings, let's see how things go

Feel free to predict which engine may win

Wasn't the HS series considered to be the best in the university  :!: :?:
Sorry Ray,but using generic opening books with question marked opening lines doesn't help me to predict anything....

Well I ran some test matches first before the tournament itself, and in a couple of games the engine evaluations out of book were around 1.0 - higher than I'd like. You never really know with these things and how they would have turned out. Who knows, the engines may have just got it wrong and not understood the positions properly. That's highly likely. I use Harry's books exclusively these days, they have my vote of confidence. Note my use of the word possibly

True that some engines overestimate some positions, but an over 1.0 is too much....
Please do post some of these opening lines if possible and I'll give you my opinion....
BTW,why don't you use a professional generic opening book, let's say Power Book 2007 for your tests and leave these amateur opening books full of suspecious opening lines :!: :?:

I didn't take a note of the 2 examples. The actual tournament games will be posted on our public forum, so you can take a look if you wish.
Powerbook 2007 is a commercial product isn't it ? I see no reason to buy it when high quality books from Harry and others are available. It's also not available in Arena format. I've played thousands of games with Harry's books in particular, and I have confidence in them.

Crafty looks good in this match up. Thanks for running it.
Be nice if you would run Rybka 1.0,Fruit2.3.1, and Toga3.1.2 /
at long time controls. At present at 2/6 blitz They are so close
i don't know which is strongest.
In 150 games Rybka and Fruit come out even.
In 100 games Fruit and Toga come out even.
Today i plan on running Rybka and Toga Today.

Best to you,

Gerold.

I quite fancy Movei's chances actually
Yes I'll almost certainly run more of these 90+30, and your suggestions sound good  It's also a good chance for me to get to know Arena better. I don't use it normally, but having the winboard stuff running natively rather than through an adaptor just seems the right thing

Wael - you are always taking potshots against Harry under the pretense that no generic opening books are good.
However, the only time you seem to bring the issue up is when Harry's books are mentioned.
Give the man a break! He spends hours and hours of his time trying to create opening books that enthusiasts can use for free and he does a damn good job of it as a general rule.
Others also spend hours and hours of their time creating opening books for us and deserve our appreciation and respect for their efforts too. In fact, you used to do it, so you should know better!

Hello Graham and Ray,
This user "dr" will no longer be taken seriously. It is ridiculous for a long time and well-known through its "attacks". I ignore, this is the best recipe.

Graham, have you given to Ray my 12moves.abk private update from
yesterday?

Best regards,
Harry
