"The Thing" from Carpenter

Post by Winterbottom »

Hi!
In the movie "The Thing" (1982, John Carpenter) there's Kurt Russel playing against a chess machine. Does anybody know, what computer system this is? And what program? Or is it no real program, but just set up for the movie?
Thanks!
Here's a link to some pictures:

Would you believe "Microchess" from Peter Jennings? From memory only as I never owned an "Apple" computer but I think that is what it is.

There was a computer from down under that had nice chess
program on it at that time. I think it had a math coproccessor.
I had Apple at that time. The apple had a math
coproccessor used for the CAD programs. It may of had
a chess program on it.

The Thing is one of my top 5 favorite movies. By the way, computer is the only woman character in the film (voice). :-)

I think, this is it!
Any emulator-geek here, who can give me a link to a SargonII-Disk-File (.dsk) for the apple? Should be abandonware, as SargonIII is already abandonware.

Ah, great bit of trivia! :-)

The pair Carpenter/Russell has produced some of my favorite movies too: The Thing, Escape from N.Y., Escape from L.A. and Big Trouble in Little China. I watched these again not too long ago... the latter is still one of the best even after a dozen views! :-)

P.S. Suggestions are welcome if you have to recommend other classics with Kurt Russell not listed above!
