Endgame testposition

Endgame position that seems hard

[d] 2n5/2rk3p/R1pb1pp1/1p1p4/1P1P4/1NPB2PP/3K1P2/8 w - - 0 30

Best move is Na5, it seems that Fruit 2.1 & Deep Shredder 10 have problems seeing this in reasonable time.

Going a bit forward Na5, Ne7 we have this position

[d] 8/2rkn2p/R1pb1pp1/Np1p4/1P1P4/2PB2PP/3K1P2/8 w - - 0 31

Fruit & Shredder doesnt see anything in 5 minutes here, but after playing the sac they both get it.

Hello Kim, Toga agrees with you. I takes a while but Toga Checkov 1.4 Beta_2bb does find the sacrifice in the first position:

Toga II 1.4 Beta5c also finds it, I think it uses different pruning, but not heavier. The optimized Intel compile is faster in nodes per second also of course, so it is not easy to directly make a comparison:

Hi Eelco

Thanks for the nice words :)

Yes it seems that computers have a very hard time cracking this one - I will try to let Deep Shredder 10 have a long think about this one, although I must admit last night I didnt have the patience to wait 30+ minutes to see if it found the solution. I'll give it some more time and see if it solves it and how long it takes.

Yes it seems somewhat faster, and it finds the other "solution" to the sac - could be fun understanding why it chooses Ra7 instead of Nxc6 for black, is there any evaluation changes between the 2 versions ?

Well I think its a very hard problem for computers, right now Deep Shredder 10 is running and i will post the time for it.

BTW what does Hamster choose as blacks best move after Nxc6 ?
