Because then everyone owning the free 2.0 version would start asking for an upgrade 8-)
LOL

Well... I did purchase 2.1 with cold hard cash. And the website just says existing customer, it does not say 2.2 users only. Doesn't handing over cash the first time make me an existing customer?

I still have the original email thanking me for the support of his engine when I originally purchased it. I guess that was all a joke

Existing customer is usually the customer who has the latest version before the new release. I thought that was understood. He could have called 2.2, 3.0 or 10.0 or any name he wanted to. Instead he just chose to call it 2.2 with a decent 50 point increment in pretty much every time control or setting. Common bro, have some sportsman spirit, he might sell 1000 copies at the most, and it probably wouldnt hurt you to pay the extra 8 bucks or so.

I would have probably been more sympathetic if he had just explained that to me. He first wrote me saying that I was not on the existing customer list after I sent the Paypal payment. I wrote back saying I was a 2.1, not a 2.2 customer. I never heard anything back from him after that. I got a refund but no explaination. He just ignored the two emails I wrote asking for an explaination. Just a refund and no email to say that. I am a cordial guy. If he just wrote what you said above than there would be no issue. Thought is was rather poor to ignore me. I might have just paid the extra dollars if he was nice about it. But not now.

That doest sound much like Alex, but everyone has their bad days. May be he was just having one of those. Who knows, he might just contact you back when he gets the time, I am pretty sure he is beat now.
