what is the record: Engine being clear number 1

Post by ozziejoe »

Does someone keep stats on how long an engine was clearly number 1 (i.e., rating lists basically agreed)? I wonder what the top five engines were, in terms of length at time #1.

Rybka must be heading into its second or third year as number 1? Even the new engines are clearly behind.

Shredder and Junior pretty much swapped the WCCC/IPCCC titles until 2005 when Zappa won, Junior again in 2006, and finally Rybka in 2007.

From 1996 to 2005, computer chess was really dominated though by two programs, being Shredder and Junior.

Crafty however stomped on everyone all over the chess servers with version 16.6, so much in fact servers were limiting who could have a Crafty account and at what rating they would allowed to play at or time control.

Ferret was very strong, and while not rated on the SSDF list or entered into many tournaments, Bruce Moreland had a definite contender.

The SSDF list has numerous entries for Fritz, Junior, Hiarcs, Chess Tiger, Rebel, and of course Shredder topping the list over the years. Rybka probably has held it the longest though.

I was kicked out of Chapters because I moved all the Bibles to the fiction section.

I wish he would work on that engine again, and sell it himself like many engine authors do nowadays.

probably not.
Fritz never had 2 years on the top of the ssdf.
I suspect that Genius and Shredder were more years clear number 1.

I disagree because world championships are clearly misleading.
The winner of the world championshp is not the engine that is clear number 1 because there are not enough games to get significant results and results are based on opening preperations and not only on the engines.

I believe that in most of the ssdf lists from 1998-2002 Fritz was the ssdf leader but it was not clearly dominating and I think that there was no one dominating engine.
