I played with Toga on a Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz and with 256 MB Hash. Rybka played on 4x 2.4 GHz Quad. Timecontrol was 16m + 0s.
Toga 1.4.1SE (e3) played with this Settings:
[OPTIONS]
Verification Reduction=4 (Default = 5)
Toga Lazy Eval Margin=225 (Default = 200)
In the first game, I think that Rybka stand better after the opening, and for black was here not easy hold the game. Rybka won nice! Then in the games 2 and 3, Toga played very well and hold two nice draws. I am very pleased with the play of Toga 1.4.1SE (e3).

Interesting result, I will try your settings at blitz games as soon as I have finished testing the 1.4.1SE default version.

Thank You!Golem wrote:Interesting result, I will try your settings at blitz games as soon as I have finished testing the 1.4.1SE default version.
It is possible that on Bitz perhaps the default-setting are a little bit stronger, then the default setting is a little bit faster.
In my opinion, my setting should be stronger at timecontrol 15m --> or longer timecontrols. My 3 games against Rybka, I played on timecontrol 16m + 0s.
But we will see, nothing is inpossible.
My thanks in advance!

Re: 3 games Toga 1.4.1SE (e3) vs. Rybka 2.3.2a MP
Hello Eduard,
Good to see that there is no more Toga King Safety necessary in your e3 settings.
But I was wondering Eduard whether you checked your Private Messages already as it seems Denis has not had a reply yet?

OK now it is out.
Yes, Yesterday I seen a pm of Denis. He created me a private Toga II 1.4.1SE_nemeth Engine. Many thanks to Denis again! I am very happy!
I would not post about that.
Of course I played with my private Toga II 1.4.1SE_nemeth on playchess.
Here my installation under Fritz:
[ENGINE]
Name=Toga II 1.4.1SE T2e3
Author=Thomas Gaksch and Fabien Letouzey
Filename=C:\Programme\ChessBase\Engines\Toga141se_nemeth\Toga141SE-nemeth-2cpu.exe
You see that here is a new Engine Toga141SE-nemeth-2cpu.exe.
Denis modified here this two parameters
Verification Reduction=4
Toga Lazy Eval Margin=225
and sent me a private message with a download link, only for my private Engine of Toga.
I will not post this download Link , then I have saved my engine on a CD ROM, that is enough.
If I play on Playchess, then You can see on screen only the name "Toga II 1.4.1SE T2e3" and the Server save the game too with this name.
On my PC-Screen of course I can see more, that:
Toga II 1.4.1SE_nemeth T2e3
OK, nice, I have now a my private Engine of Toga 1.4.1SE (Single and 2 CPU).
My best wishes!

Re: My first Blitz Games with Toga II 1.4.1SE_nemeth
My first Blitz Games with Toga II 1.4.1SE_nemeth (read about my post before).
Filename=C:\Programme\ChessBase\Engines\Toga141se_nemeth\Toga141SE-nemeth-2cpu.exe
For "Playchess" Server-playing I called the Setting Toga II 1.4.1SE T2e3.
Denis Mendoza compile the Engine (privat only) with this Parameters:
Verification Reduction=4 (Default was 5)
Toga Lazy Eval Margin=225 (Default was 200)
I seen in my Nemeth-Toga-Engine more parameters then in original Toga II 1.4.1SE, but I think that the other Parameters are egual with the original Setting.
I played on Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz.
Of course all game was live and with Permanent Brain (for me is PB important !).
I played one game against Zappa Mexico II, and two games against Fritz 10, Blitz 5 games - my Nick is Solist.

Re: Fantastic Blitz Game by Toga II 1.4.1SE_nemeth
Viele Grusse, Eduard
Your newly tweaked Toga sounds interesting. At longer/standard time controls, how much stronger do you estimate it is versus the default settings?
I test engines at extra-long time controls (usually 40-moves/3-hours). While I get good information that way of the strength and characteristics of various engines, the long time controls means that tournaments take a long time and so I have fewer games to analyze.
So far in two tournaments that I've run, Toga II 3.1.2SE has surpassed Toga II 1.4.1SE, both playing with the same book. The other engines were: Rybka 2.3.2a 32-bit (the victor in one and third place finisher in the other), Strelka 2.0B (second place finisher in both - playing with the same book as the two Togas), Glaurung Lodz 2007, Rybka 1.2f 32-bit, Rybka 1.1 32-bit, Fruit 2.2.1, Naum 2.0, Shredder 9, and Spike 1.2 Turin. Shredder and Spike were the bottom two finishers in both tournaments - alternating places. Toga II 3.1.2SE won the first tournament.
I should mention that the Togas and Strelka all play with a special book that I've composed. I'm a correspondence chess player, so I've created a book of the lines that I play, plan to play, or am interested in testing. In this way, I learn about the various engines while also testing my openings.
That said, I've only 20-games of tournament experience with the default Toga II 1.4.1SE, but its results haven't been impressive relative to other engines. So, I'm interested in testing your settings in the future, Eduard. Unfortunately, time is limited for the next few days.

That is an interesting remark for programmers and book editors.Stephen Ham wrote: I'm a correspondence chess player, so I've created a book of the lines that I play, plan to play, or am interested in testing. In this way, I learn about the various engines while also testing my openings.![]()
That is exactly what I mean when I am sceptical about intensively engine-tuned, narrow books. I mean, in contrast to books which serve the purpose of playing the engine's preferred openings, instead of the user's preferred openings (or a solid and wide 'general' repertoire) and also keeping in mind that not anybody can or wants to create his own books.
The obvious idea is that TWO books are required:
1. solid, wide 'general theory' representation for the chess player
2. tuned engine book as best support for computer chess competition (only)

You raised some wonderful issues. I think there are corollaries to this as well:
1) How objective are the results of my tournament games when engines play with different books?
2) Did I match the books to the engine's properly?
Here's what I've done. Whenever an engine comes with a book, then I always use that. Engines without books are given one that I've created, based somewhat upon my perceptions of the engine's strengths/weakness and partly upon what I want to test.
For example, I've noticed that Fruit 2.2.1 does surprisingly well with hypermodern defenses, such as the Modern, Pirc, Benoni, and King's Indian, etc. So, it got a book with those lines as Black.
Then, when the tournament games are examined, I check to ensure that opening book errors are "fixed" by inputting better lines. I do this for all books.
As for the book of my openings, I want objectivity. I want to find out in advance if my ideas are any good...rather than learning the "hard way" in a correspondence game.
Does my book confer an advantage? I think it's generally superior to all other books I've seen, including RybkaII's excellent book. But, I'm generally a technical (read: positional) player, while engines prefer open tactical positions where calculating can be done with less emphasis upon positional details or endgame prospects.
Finally, regarding the issue of narrow books versus broad books, there is a difference. If a narrow book is objectively strong AND tuned to the engine, then it's ideal for winning results. Broad books are probably written for commercial reasons, to appeal to a wide market that demands variety.
One example of broad books is Shredder's. An example of a narrow book is Junior 9's. The latter is a terrible book that seems neither objectively good, nor tuned to the engine. For example, why force Junior to play the Four Pawns attack against the King's Indian and the Saemisch Attack against the Nimzo, without giving it good lines, and deep lines, to help it? Instead, the book usually just ends abruptly in bad positions.
Sorry for rambling, Mike.
All the best,
Steve
