Two more 40/400 games completed. One draw and one win to Rybka

Rybka now leads 7.0 - 5.0

I will terminate the 40/400 tests at the 20 game mark. I simply don't like it. There is the issue of early draws with etiquette turned on, which I was aware of right at the very beginning, and the problem if you turn it off of games potentially lasting several days. I puzzled over this issue for many days. It was only an experiment, and in any case CEGT have this already and do a great job at it. So I see no reason to continue it.

I am enthusiastic about the "game in 24 hrs" matches though, and there "etiquette" can be turned off with no possibility of games going beyond 24 hrs. I like it because it is the same type of time control used in tournaments, and it places emphasis as well on an engine's time management which is important.

So - for me this 40/400 experiment is dead. Game in 24 hrs lives on though, at least for a while :)

yes, this is definetely a problem with Shredder Classic-GUI also with shorter
time controls. All would be fine, if one could terminate a game after a
several number of moves, but this is - so far - not possible with this GUI.
Although I like ShredderClassic very much, this is the reason, that I do
not use it as much as would like to. Arena is much better in this case.

Under Arena you can give a maximum number of moves (I normally take
160 full moves) after that the game is adjudicated as a draw, which is
normally correct but must be checked. And additionally you can give Arena a concrete
value (e.g. -700 for 5 moves), after which Arena terminates the game as
lost and starts next one.

Hi Wolfgang,

Yes I noticed this in Arena, and was very keen to use it for that reason. But when I tried Quad Rybka in Arena 1.1, it seemed to ignore the hash setting. Naum used 1,024MB but Rybka only used 37MB or something. I need to try again

I'd actually like to run Zappa vs Naum, and that may work perfectly

Actually - I'm beginning to like Arena very much ! I've used it for two one-off 90+30 tournaments now, and I'm very impressed

Have you tried beta 5 ?
