Is there anything common between Chess 2.20, Obender 3.2.4 and Woodpecker? I dont want to waste time testing three engines from the same programmer, I would be thankful if someone can tell me which one is likely the strongest.
Thanks in advance

Not sure which is the strongest, but OBender seems to be his main engine, so I go with that.Tony Thomas wrote:Is there anything common between Chess 2.20, Obender 3.2.4 and Woodpecker? It's really odd to see three engines from the same author being developed all at the same time. You'll also notice that the codes were almost the same, though internally revised to have different styles of play, as what he intended. The engine updates for us users were not being informed on a regular basis, that is why we were surprised that the versions had come a long way, and with another addition!Tony Thomas wrote:Is there anything common between Chess 2.20, Obender 3.2.4 and Woodpecker? All engines have learning capabilities. Obender is his long-time main and stable version, though his new creation "chess1(chess2.2)" is quite better than Obender 3.2.4 on my blitz tests (though having low nps, and search depth). Woodpecker is probably left in his closet at the moment as his "brute force" approach didn't work well. The latest rewrite "chess1" has all the marks of a promising engine. You can see in this link that he intentionally marked elo strength of "2400?" on his new engine, while Obender still has "2300?". That was something to think about here:

It is better to test both engines to see the difference. But if tournament rules allow only 1 engine per author, Obender will be the main engine to test.

It would be interesting to note that Woodpecker managed to score much beter than Obender in my tournaments due to a better time management. You do know that it was Qchess (aka Chess) that was released to the public first right? It was released as sort of a shareware engine with a GUI.

Re: Common Source??
Thanks Thomas, I didn't know that. I only know Qchess from this link:
http://www.eamonnramsay.plus.com/
It's a different chess program.
I'm happy thay he's trying to earn a bit to continue with his board game developments. Good for him.

So he still got it as a shareware? Where are you finding all these links?

Re: Common Source??
I have a collection of links which I've visited through the years- but not all. I only found out about E. korniloff's new site at SDCHESS.RU where it was released lately.Tony Thomas wrote:So he still got it as a shareware? Where are you finding all these links?
And to add something about the new "Chess_2_20", the internal engine name was still "chess1 version 2.00", but not actually the same engine as "chess_2_00_rebuild". I've compiled a faster version but just noticed today that I blundered in renaming the engine, maybe later.
Master Jim does it better, you know

I anticipated that Geroldgerold wrote:Thanks Denis. Thinker won the first game.
But wait till another learning-enabled chess engine like Obender and Romichess be released soon. Let's say it's another sibling of the TOGA:Source Engine. Romichess will have a forminable opponent in this field. Thomas and Daniel knows about this, so this is no rumor. I mentioned it before - LearningToga by William "Bill" Mowery Jr. If you loved Romichess (just as I do), why not this one. I have no infos about the release date, but was informed by Bill today.
