Here white (Henry Bird 1883) played.....h4...and went on to win!

Hiarcs 11.2 actually finds ...h4 in 6 seconds...!!

Very impressed with Hiarcs 11.2.....just installed today.... :lol:

Post by Mike S. »

While I don't doubt that Bird played a great attacking game (which I didn't find at the moment), I wonder if this position and h4 is suitable as a good test. Because I do not see big obstacles to overcome before deciding to play h4. It is more or less 'normal'. White has not castled short yet, and O-O-O remains an option. (Maybe h4 is more difficult for engines which prefer O-O very much over O-O-O, and/or dislike long castlings more than others.)

I thought it could depend on the aggressiveness of an engine though. So I compared two style variants of the same engine:

Analysis by Chess Tiger 14.0 (D945 3.4 GHz)

1.exf6 Bxf6 2.0-0 a6 3.Qd2 Qd6 4.Rfe1 Bd7 5.Qe3 Ne7 6.Ne5 Nf5 7.Qf4 Rf7 8.Qg4 Re7 9.Re2
= (-0.04) Depth: 10 00:00:00 212kN
= (-0.24) Depth: 16 00:04:05 107mN

Analysis by Gambit Tiger 2.0:

1.exf6 Bxf6 2.0-0 a6 3.Qd2 g6 4.Qe3 Qe7 5.Rfe1 Qg7 6.Ne2 e5 7.dxe5 Nxe5 8.Nxe5 Bxe5 9.c3
= (-0.02) Depth: 10 00:00:00 172kN
= (-0.22) Depth: 15 00:01:15 33796kN

Not much difference here. - Another try, with my best engine for analysis in active/attacking positions:

Analysis by Rybka WinFinder 2.2 32-bit:

1.exf6 Bxf6 2.0-0 Qd6 3.Nb5 Qd7 4.Nc3 b6 5.Bb5 Bb7 6.Qd2 a6 7.Bxc6
= (0.00) Depth: 2 00:00:00
= (0.16) Depth: 15 00:01:37 5406kN

Ater I switched to multi-pv after depth 16, suddenly h4 was on top with the same eval of 0.16 too :mrgreen: but after depth 16 was finished again in multi-pv, it looks like this:

1. = (0.16): 1.exf6 Bxf6 2.0-0 Qd6 3.Nb5 Qd7 4.Nc3 g6 5.Bb5 a6 6.Bxc6 Qxc6 7.Re1 Bd7
2. = (0.16): 1.Qd2 Qe8 2.0-0-0 Bd7 3.Ne2 Qb8 4.h4 b5 5.h5 Qb6 6.h6 g6
3. = (0.11): 1.h4 Nb8 2.h5 h6 3.0-0 Bd7 4.Ne2 c5 5.dxc5 Bxc5 6.c4 dxc4 7.Bxc4 Nc6

To let an engine run for only some seconds is not enough.

I found the game on chessgames.com (with a java applet): http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1001946

[Event "Tnmt, London"]
[Site "Tnmt, London"]
[Date "1883.??.??"]
[EventDate "?"]

[Result "1-0"]
[White "Henry Edward Bird"]
[Black "Alexander G Sellman"]
[ECO "C13"]
[WhiteElo "?"]
[BlackElo "?"]
[PlyCount "41"]

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. Bxf6 Bxf6 6. Nf3
Nc6 7. e5 Be7 8. a3 O-O 9. Bd3 f5 10. h4 Qe8 11. Ne2 Nd8
12. c4 c6 13. Nf4 b6 14. Rc1 Qd7 15. Qa4 dxc4 16. Qxc4 Bb7
17. Qb3 c5 18. Bc4 Kf7 19. d5 exd5 20. e6+ Nxe6 21. Ne5+ 1-0

Note that 10. h4 may be played to hinder any eventual ... g5 push by black even if white don't plan on attacking king-side.

On move 10, Toga 1.4beta5c seems to like h4 and evaluates the position as being more or less equal:

Code: Select all

00:00:23.7	0,15	16	11039533	h4 b6 Qd2 Na5 b4 Nc4 Bxc4 dxc4 Qe2 Ba6 b5 Bb7 Qxc4 Qd7 h5 Bxf3 gxf3

Now if I let white play 10. 0-0 (so that eventual counterplay with g5 by black will be particularly effective as white king is now sitting there), Toga gives black a slight advantage (but doesn't play 10... g5 right away as you can see):

Great.....

Fritz 11 at least shows ....h4....which could be the beginning of a king side atttack.

That is all I was asking for, and it shows that it is thinking very much like a grandmaster would play it.... :D

Thanks!
