Also has anyone tried renaming the Fritz 11 exe i.e. would I be able to play F11 v F11.1?

Just checked my Fritz (Fritz Chess 11 - Excalibur Publishing).

Found the engine...

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ChessBase\Engines\Fritz 11.engine

Of course not an exe...

Yes, that is version 11.1. The version number is accessible in Windows XP but not in Vista without changing the filetype -- one of the many deficiencies of Vista.

Why oh why do CB not update the displayed version number when they change the engine...

Maybe it's because this is only a minor update. But nobody seems to have figured out yet what this update is supposed to improve.

Still, there are differences between versions 11.0.0.0 and 11.1.0.0, which has already been established from test games. So the official reaction appears to be in error. What I find interesting, though, is that both versions have exactly the same filesize.

Ray, is it possible that the above mentioned scenerio was a marketing strategy from chessbase to create more talks about Fritz? People love conspiracy theories you know..
