Thanks Swami. But the improvement wasn't over a short time to me . I spent a while working on the C# version after v0.21(unreleased, but quite a bit stronger), then switched to rewriting in C++. Then a bunch of search related work resulted in v2, with a bunch of eval. tweaking leading up to v2.20.

Garbochess has no relation to the Vista chess engine, in fact, the original Garbochess C# version (v0.1 - material only eval) could beat Vista chess on the highest level easily, with Garbo getting 1s per move.

Hehe, well, I've beat you to the bitboard reprogramming. No material imbalance tables though sadly, I've been too lazy to program an imbalance evaluator given a huge db of games.

I've been trying some ideas about treating the evaluation function more as a predictor than an "evaluation", and seeing what I can get. Results are not amazing yet (self-play it gets toasted), but I'm confident there is some improvement there. Of course, I'm probably deluded .

I am surprised I missed this one. Goat told me that the word Cracker coming from you sounds funny. Goat also told me that you are whiter than snow white though not as pretty.
