A nice RomiChess surprise!

Post by Michael Sherwin »

In George Lyapko's section G with two rounds to go Garbo is in first with 19 points. Snitch, Tytan and Spider are tied for second with 18 points. And Romi is all alone in 5th with 17 points. There are only 4 promotion slots! Romi will have to face DanaSah 3.63 for the last two games. Can Romi do it. Will Romi promote.

Section G appears to be finished, and Romi promoted :). Congrats!

Garbo is currently in the shop recieving some serious refitting, and 2.20 is destroying the current version. The pain of chess programming.

Hi Gary,

Garbochess has tremendously improved in a short time, such a excellent achievement in short time, congrats!

Did Garbochess originially come as a microsoft chess?

Regards.

Thanks Swami. But the improvement wasn't over a short time to me :). I spent a while working on the C# version after v0.21(unreleased, but quite a bit stronger), then switched to rewriting in C++. Then a bunch of search related work resulted in v2, with a bunch of eval. tweaking leading up to v2.20.

Garbochess has no relation to the Vista chess engine, in fact, the original Garbochess C# version (v0.1 - material only eval) could beat Vista chess on the highest level easily, with Garbo getting 1s per move.

Thanks!

One day I may reprogram Garbo to bitboards and add material imbalance tables!

Hehe, well, I've beat you to the bitboard reprogramming. No material imbalance tables though sadly, I've been too lazy to program an imbalance evaluator given a huge db of games.

I've been trying some ideas about treating the evaluation function more as a predictor than an "evaluation", and seeing what I can get. Results are not amazing yet (self-play it gets toasted), but I'm confident there is some improvement there. Of course, I'm probably deluded :).

I am surprised I missed this one. Goat told me that the word Cracker coming from you sounds funny. Goat also told me that you are whiter than snow white though not as pretty.
