Rebel versus Prodeo
Which is newer? Rebel 12 of the free Prodeo. I thought the Rebel/Prodeo guy had decided to do like the Fruit guy and give up programming before giving away his engine for free but which of the two is newer/stronger?

good. You can download both of the public versions free.
I like Prodeo best. It is very strong and my favorite program.
Has a really good opening book and makes for a very good
training program for people who wants to lean opening.
Best to you,
Gerold.

Hi Enrico !
Rebel is a commercial chess engine. The last was Rebel 12 -around 2630 ELO on blitz 40/4 (CEGT).For details :
http://www.lokasoft.com/rebel12.htm
Pro Deo is a free chess engine of the same author (Ed Schroder). The last is Pro Deo 1.6 beta ( around 2.646 ELO points on CEGT 40/20).
Rebel 12 dated from 2002. Pro Deo 1.6 beta from 2007. Pro Deo 1.6 beta seems to be stronger at long time control.
Both are WB engines.Basically Pro Deo is a development of Rebel 12 engine.
The style of both engines is very attractive.
Regards,
Silvian

It is also worth noting that Ed is a very nice guy. It does not make the engine any stronger, but it makes things more pleasant from my perspective to use things made by a nice person. Of course, it is also true that a very large percentage of chess programmers are very nice guys.

Re: Rebel versus Prodeo
I think that Pro Deo is a newer version of Rebel, Ed Schroder had to change the name for some reason, and he choose "Pro Deo" thinking that it meant "Free."Sylwy wrote:Pro Deo is a free chess engine of the same author (Ed Schroder).
Pro Deo Beta can be downloaded from the Hiarcs Forum, by registering there and joining the Chess Thinkers Forum for Rebels sub-forum.

The expression does mean "for free" (but appearantly only) in dutch. Re: Rebel versus Prodeo
"Pro Deo" is a Latin phrase, originally meaning "for God" - which probably may be expanded into something like "...and not for my own benefit". Beside that there is a verb "prodeo" meaning "I go forward" - also a fitting name for a strong and ever-improving engine.

I understand him: it is not easy to be a Dutch in these days.GenoM wrote:He's better in latin than you are.Tony wrote:Yes, obviously you are better in dutch than I am.PK wrote:"Pro Deo" is a Latin phrase, originally meaning "for God" - which probably may be expanded into something like "...and not for my own benefit". He projects his "bad humor" around, but nothing serious.
For me it is an obvious latin influence in a modern Dutch, but I wonder:
Did Ed know it a the time of "baptism"?
"Well, I´m just a soul whose intentions are good,
Oh Lord, please don´t let me be misunderstood."
Oh Lord, please don´t let me be misunderstood."
