Grand Blitz Tournament - EPC Proposals/Vote

I'm planning to organize a Grand Blitz tournament(GBT), so, I'm looking for a feedback or some sort of agreement amongst participants regarding the conditions for EPC, by majority.

As you know, that the tournament is going to take a lot of time, -101- engines and a single round robin. I'd guess it would take anywhere around 30-40 days.

Conditions:

-Hardware:Q6600, 2 GB ram
-Time limit: 1/1
-Opening book:Engines use its Own book.
-The tournament is just like Olivier's Open war, only difference is that it isn't author-registeration only tournament.

101 engines are chosen from Division 1-6 plus few reservations.

Why do I plan to run this tournament?

-I want to compare rankings/ratings of the usual division(1-6) to that of GBT. I wanted to know whether engines do perform consistently on both "16 engines per division" and "101 engines GBT"

-I want to implement changes to Division system based on the performance of every single engine in GBT.


So far, I have these proposals I can think of, plus few proposal from one of the participants here.

- Predict the top 3 + Bottom 3.

- Predict the top 4 + Bottom 4

- Predict the top 3, Middle 3, and bottom 3

- Predict the Top 5 + Bottom 5

You are welcome to make proposals or vote in the poll.

PS; I think this particular tournament is going to be interesting because I expect that atleast 15-20 people would post in their predictions.

I don't find voting for bottom engines interesting but I voted for top 3 and bottom 3. I wonder why voting for top 6 isn't an option.

Well, That's good suggestion, What are the other options you'd like to suggest? (I could delete the poll and add in more options)

Voting for 6 engines seems little less because it is the 101 engines tournament!

For 16 engines, 3 engine predictions is acceptable. for 101, I'd think there should be more to balance the competition.

Sorry, I realized that after I posted and edited my post.

As for that, I think guessing the top engines is the most interesting part of the tourney, so perhaps you could have the members try guessing the top 8 engines. I don't approve voting for the top 50 top 51 and top 52 engines as that seems very random.

You could have a separate, optional section in where the members have to guess for the engine that will end in last place, something like the "Mr. Irrelevant" from WBEC.

Ok, I have accepted your suggestions and made changes. I agree that guessing the 49,50,51 would be a lot of work, but I'm leaving it as one of the options anyway since members have participated on this condition. Don't worry I didn't vote for this option

My choice isn't listed. I think the most interesting (i.e. hardest) would be to predict only the middle x. The top and bottom are easy, just take division 1 or 6 and pull from there. The middle section is much harder.

And here's hoping that ZCT gets into the reserves.

Ok, I add ZCT into the 101 engines list. Actually, I was going to ask authors who do not find their engines in the list whether they would like to see their engines playing.

Ok, so it's not random, but arbitrary. I mean, why 49, 50 and 51 and not 23 45 and 76, or 97, 4 and 68? Than one engine follows another is meaningless.

Still, Zach (and perhaps a few others) would be disheartened if the tourney is too easy, so I'd suggest creating categories, in one you'd try to guess the top 8, in the other the middle 8, and in the other the last 8. So I could lose in the second and third category and still guess the top 8 correctly, and people could choose to only enter the categories they want or enter them all.

23, 45 are almost random but would be interesting because those that guessed 25 will get points close to 23. But, I'd not vouch for it.

As for Middle order, You'd have to guess Division 3-4 engines that falls on this rank, therefore it is bit of a guesswork where you could not rely on intuition. I do see that some of you believe that predicting the top 6 alone is difficult while others like Zach think that it is easier because they know the performance of particular engines.

That's good suggestion. Perhaps I could create the categories, Top, Middle and Bottom (3 or 4)? 8 is big a number for 3 categories. We can therefore award 3 winners.
