I bought a CD with 31 languages on it. Dutch seemed the most easy to 'hear', so I decided to learn it. The first sentence in the lesson was giving me alot of trouble. I copied it onto a piece of paper and spent a week learning to read it with comprehension and speak it, while using the CD. Then I carried that piece of paper around with me for a couple of months, pulling it out every opportunity to practice. Then I lost the paper and the sentence was completely gone from my mind the same day. So I gave up trying to learn a second language.

HERE IS THE INSPIRATION FOR OTHERS! :D

(I have posted about this before)

Learning the computer language C was just as hard for me, because I was born with a learning/memory definciency (for example, I have trouble with spelling) that makes it almost impossible for me to memorize many kinds of things. So, when I first wanted to write a chess program it was almost impossible to even begin. Every line of code was written one statement at a time while holding a C primer in my hand and that was after many years (on and off) of trying to learn C. I never gave up! I wrote an engine named Carnivor that barely can play a legal game and is only about 1450 ELO at Olivier Deville's 'Chess War'. It is a 'mail box' based program, but, what I really wanted to do was write a bitboard engine. One day after about a year and a half of failed attempts I figured out a way to do it. Once I could keep the bitboard method that I had finally figured out in my head long enough to start writing some code I started to add a bitboard move generator to TSCP1.81 one statement at a time while holding a C primer in one hand. Tom Kerrington posted my modified TSCP on his site which gave me the confidence and DETERMINATION to write RomiChess. One statement at a time while holding ...

I only repeat this so that others that try such difficult things that seem beyond their abilities might be inspired to never give up their dreams. :D

Merci Ludovic

Merci,
Vincent

and for our english speaking friends :
Thx Ludovic, would you like to test YACE, please ?

I am not sure if it is a good decision to test with 32 MB hash only...

I remember having had an computer with small total memory too, and installing more RAM was a great performance boost (not only for chess programs but also for general handling).

While I can somehow understand the decision to test without tablebases, it is a problem that it is not representative for a typical configuration. Almost all computer chess fans and many chess players with experience in chess software, will use at least 3- and 4-piece tablebases. I don't think all available 5- and 6-piece tables are required, but to use none at all, is questionable IMO. Why handicap other engines which can (could) use tablebases just because other engines cannot?

People who use tablebases (and bigger hash), cannot be sure if the rankings would look the same on their comps, or much different...

This is a problem. But anything else looks very good to me. A big test, and I like especially the detail results in sub-categories, with surprising differences to the total result. I did not take a look at the positions themselves, yet.

At the time I began my test I was influenced by the book Modern Chess Analysis - Robin Smith (who is often on this forum). This book says -as it seems to me- it doesn't change a lot to use more hash. Maybe it's wrong, I don't know. Anyway all the engines are used in the same conditions.

My test gives a general idea of which engine is strong or which is not. I give the positions so people can make their own test if they disagree with me. http://pagesperso-orange.fr/echecs88/te ... ement.html

The sub-categories are interesting but because it takes a lot of time I don't update them very often.
